I never played FFVII, but I used to hang out at a forum where a bunch of people (including the mod) were huge Tifa stans. They could never talk enough about how awesome she was and so much better than Aerith. I could pretty much tell it was all based on thinking "physical fighter = strong woman" and "healer in pink dress = weak and boring." I just thought Tifa must be a shallow a character if those were the kinds of fans she attracted. It sounds like I was right.

I think there are genuine reasons to like Tifa, but I'd say her and Aeris have opposite personalities from how they appear. Tifa looks physically strong and badass but is emotionally insecure and very dependent. Aeris appears to be the weak, ultra-feminine mage, but is very independent and strong in personality.

This. It's galling how the fandom, even to this day, misses the point of this neat little subversion. Then again, subsequent side material for FF7 has bastardized Aeris into being a perfect, pure, "Yamato Nadeshiko" character, so I can't exactly blame them.

Well, this forum stuff all happened when the game was still newish before any side material existed, so the fans there didn't even have that excuse.

Oh, I'm well aware of that. Amazing how some can latch on to the "Tifa punches, so she's strong and masculine and Aeris wears pink so she's pathetic and weak XDD" mindset based on such shallow pretenses. It's like these people never actually played the games.

ugh poor Aeris. I seriously dread the remakes.

I actually liked a lot about Advent Children's Tifa - mainly, the surprisingly classy and practical costume change, and the cool solo fight scene. But I could not get over how she decided that Avalanche would just sit on their asses watching Cloud get his ass handed to him by Sephiroth. That didn't seem like Tifa to me, and it certainly didn't seem like the rest of Avalanche either. Course that movie was basically a Cloud wank fest but if that's any indication as to what the remakes will be, both Aeris and Tifa are totally fucked.
