I don't ship wincest, but I always find it weird when people are so hung up on wether their will become canon or not. I am perfectly aware that 90% of my ships will never be canon. I am fine with that. I mean, what else is fandom for?

^This. I rarely ship a canon ship, and it doesn't really bother me. For me, shipping is about how I enjoy the characters together; I don't need any kind of external "proof" or anything.

Exactly. Like
I've got no strings
To hold me down
To make me fret, or make me frown
I had strings
But now I'm free
There are no strings on me

Same here. It's cool if a pairing I like does become canon, of course, I certainly won't complain about that...but I don't NEED it to be in order to enjoy it or write it or whatever

On the "proof" front, for non-canon ships it's nice to have something to ground the pairing on, but that does not have to be the same as "proof" that it will happen in canon. It's just something to say "Well look at this here, they talked and were friendly, I like to imagine it went further.".

Is this something people argue about? Like is there even a tiny vague remote chance that they would EVER make an incest ship canon?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-07 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that most people who ship Wincest actually believe that. But it's a large fandom full of crazy, so I'm sure that someone out there does.

That's true. I've heard some very crazy stories, especially about RPF tinhatters - aren't the actors they ship IRL the guys who play the brothers in the show, too?

There seems to be a lot of fans who want validation for their ships in the form of it being proven in canon.

In SPN specifically there certainly s a lot of Destiel shippers who wanted it to happen in canon, and o the opposite side a lot of Wincest fans who would act butthurt if it ever did.

Never totally discount how crazy some fans can be, and that the craziest ones are also the noisiest ones.

Yeah, arguing about whether or not Destiel will become canon makes a lot more sense to me, though of course Wincest shippers wanting it to not be canon just to validate their ship are especially entitled IMO. But yeah it will never be canon, the incest is 1000000x more of a reason to never make it canon than the gay. It won't happen. So arguing about whether it will be canon or not just seems really...head-scratchy.

I don't get that whole "will it become canon" either.

I was a slasher in the 90s. We all KNEW none of our ships would ever ever become canon.

Expecting it leads to either butthurt when it doesn't happen, or disappointment when it does and it's less awesome than the fics.

I find non-canon ships comforting. Canon ships in fandoms with continuing canon can be stressful in a "Will they? Won't they?" way.

Of course canon ships in a closed-canon fandom or never-going-to-happen ships in an open-canon fandom also have a degree of this lack of stress too.

If, like SPN, a "Never gonna happen" ship has a massive shipper base... I sit back and laugh at how they're never going to get what they want. I know that was my mindset when I was in SPN, about both Destiel and Wincest.
