I nominate "Crippled America: How to Make America Great Again" by Donald J Trump. It is Trump's plan for his presidency and a great book to read and help us understand what needs to be done in the modern world to break away from business as usual in politics. With Mister Trump getting the, well deserved, Republican nomination for president it is a timely read.

Seconded just because I'm already reading it.

I refused to buy it, though. Got it from the library.

Still gives him royalties.

Thanks for the unwarranted advice, anon. I'm not interested in reading Trump's book. If it turns out to be a serious rec and gets voted in people are more than welcome to discuss it, and I will even post the thread if people want me to, but just like any other book club participant, I have the right to not read things that I'm not comfortable reading and especially that I don't want to support financially, even indirectly.

And? I am not comfortable reading it nor supporting it. If the book club decides they want to read it they may do so. It won't be the first time I skipped out on reading the book club book.

And? You called it preferably a troll rec, as if there could be no good reason to want to read it. You don't have to read any of the recs, but if you cast personal judgement on a rec, people will probably comment on it.

Ok? I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. Your comment I replied to sounded very much like you were trying to convince me to read it. Of course people are giving opinions on my personal judgment, this is the internet, and that (the giving of opinions on my opinion) is not what I was objecting to.

My point was just that there were motives to want to read the book beyond liking Donald Trump or supporting his ideologies. I might rec a Mao biography or some of his writings eventually and I would hope no one takes that as a sign that I support Maoism (or am trolling).

Again: ok? I'm not sure what I said to make you think you (general you) can never read a book with someone you disagree with. And, of course, I don't technically have to defend my decision not to read something.

I wasn't concerned that you thought I couldn't read the book. But I wouldn't like to be called out as a troll because of a rec, or have the rec slammed. Obviously we can't control what people want to say about our recs (iirc, some nonny said they would never vote for any of my recs, simply because I was the one reccing them) but if people do trash the recs it might make people hesitate to rec something.

In most cases I would agree with you but it's Trump. I'm not comfortable supporting him even tacitly. I am willing in this case to put my position on reading his stuff in book club on the table. Again, others do not have to agree, and they are free to vote for and read the book if they wish.

But you could highlight bits and find phrases for out of context threads :O

Well feel free not to vote for it in the monthly poll. However as club organizer, if it makes it to the top spot then you have a duty to lead the discussion on it.

Very. Once you took on the position of organizing the club you committed to reading each book and helping guide discussion. If the club organizer stops giving a fuck about the books then the rest of the club will start to vanish, again. It is pretty much what happened last time, remember. I would also point out that part of the whole book club deal is expanding your literary wings and reading stuff you'd never normally read and seeing if it stirs something in you or not Refusing to read a club book because you disagree with the politics is a violation of that spirit. That is crappy enough when it is a regular member getting all up and fussed, but the club organizer? That is just bad.

Nope. Even if I thought the word "commit" was appropriate here (it's not - I am not going to prioritize this over IRL, for example; I will do my best to coordinate it but this isn't for a class or a salary and sometimes things come up), I never said when I started the club that I was going to read every book, and I have been specific about that before. There has been one other book that I haven't read while I was organizing; I'm no 100% sure why I didn't read it but I was still in college at the time so it was probably stress/lack of time/lethargy/something like that. I'm like any other participant - I read it when it interests me, which it usually does because I like books and am trying to expand my reading horizons, but by "coordinating" I am only doing the legwork - posting threads, making the poll, basically consolidating everything. If I do read the book I post questions to try to get the thread going but I encourage others to do that as well - that isn't an exclusive thing for me.

It is pretty much what happened last time, remember.

The book club ended last time because I started working second shift, meaning I could no longer do it because I'd be working 95% of the nights the post went up during the week, and nobody else wanted to organize it. I switched back to first shift last fall and decided to start the club up again this spring.

The book club exists for fun. Period. People can choose which months they want to participate and choose not to read any book. Yes, for me, part of the reason I like it is to expand my literature experience, but that's a personal decision. It's not a requirement. This is honestly a really obnoxious take, and it's interesting that you're pulling it out now considering people have been very vocal before about not reading a book because they don't agree with its message or are otherwise uncomfortable with it. Were you too busy being the book club police when an anon declared they weren't reading April's book because it had a rape apology theme? (I don't even think it did, after reading it, but it still would have been obnoxious for you to tell them they HAD to, so I'm glad you didn't, even though I find your double standard really silly.)

I am just a regular member, anon. I only organize (again: that's doing work to make it happen, not holding some special position!) because nobody else has stepped up to do it, so if I don't do it, it won't get done, and I want book club to exist. You are acting extra entitled by declaring that because I've volunteered to do all the work, I should also be required to do even more work and go against my personal values when it comes to supporting authors, or against my own levels of discomfort when it comes to reading material.
