Um... because SMG is a real person and Buffy was a character whose relationships were being written for her?

Also, pretty sure she was making a joke.

+1 reading below I'm glad to see that a bunch of people agree with this, because why is OP blaming SMG for her character??

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't she also, like, super all-in on Angel/Buffy, though

+1! Sarah didn't write the scripts!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I came down here to say!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well, she's making a joke about the dysfunctional relationship of a fictional character when she herself played a fictional character who also engaged in fundamental relationships. I thought that was pretty funny!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations on utterly failing to distinguish between TV and real life, OP.

The tweet reads to me like she thinks it's "kind of" a jerk move in a funny way, not like she's seriously criticizing it.

You are aware that SMG is NOT Buffy...are you?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
How dare she judge without considering the character she played on a tv show that ended 13 years ago!!!!!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I could see saying "I know" in response to "I love you" if I was distracted, or because, really, how are you supposed to respond to that? But thanks to Star Wars, I know if I did that I could pass it off as a deliberate quote!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, or I love you, too, are entirely appropriate responses.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
"...because, really, how are you supposed to respond to that?"

Seriously? Does "I love you, too" not come to mind at all if you, well, actually love the person?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
As others have mentioned, Sarah is not Buffy. And she's right. I liked the original script line of Han saying "I love you too." a lot better.

Eh. Han's a jerk, so 'I know' is a lot more in-character.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
glad you had no say in star wars because that line is completely out of character

Huh?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Firstly, it was kind of a jerk move - it fit because Han was kind of a jerk, which Harrison Ford understood.

Secondly, even if Sarah Michelle Gellar was responsible for writing Buffy's dysfunctional relationships, which she wasn't, how would that make her disqualified to judge jerk moves?

First, considering the context of the movie, I think she's joking and even if she weren't, it actually wasn't a jerk move, but I can see how people would see it that way.

Secondly, it was the type of thing angel would say, but like, being a jerk.

Thirdly, in your future endeavors op, it might help to know that people who have gone through shit can more easily see when something is shit.

Seems like she might be saying that about someone using that in real life, too. And hey - it's kinda jerky.

I remember something about Lucas saying to Ford to reply with what he thought Han Solo would have replied, since ILU2 didn't feel right, but my memory is kinda blurry on this. Let me do a quick google on this...

"The scripted scene had Solo replying with "I love you, too." But Ford thought that just wasn't Han, so he ad-libbed the now-iconic , character-defining line. George Lucas wasn't too happy, but director Irvin Kershner backed Ford up, and the result is one of the great Star Wars moments."

Sauce.

EDIT: BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE! Apparently the phrase wasn't as improvised as we thought:

“I think she ought to just say, ‘I love you,’ as I’m passing by her,” Ford suggests to Kershner. Later in the conversation, he makes the change to his own line, saying, “If she says, ‘I love you,’ and I say, ‘I know,’ it’s beautiful and it’s acceptable and it’s funny.”

So it’s true that the iconic line was penned by Ford, but it wasn’t improvised on the spot: It was hashed out with Kershner before the shoot. Ford also wanted to add a line of reassurance to Leia —something like “Don’t worry about this” — which eventually became his saying to Chewbacca, “You have to take care of her.” Han Solo’s final scripted line, “I’ll be back,” ended up on the cutting room floor, because Kershner wanted to make it clear that Han Solo might not survive the carbon freeze. “You can’t [reassure her] because you don’t know whether this is the end or not,” the director said to Ford.

Sauce.

Also kinda related? But it took me years to realize that Buffy was kind of attracted to supernatural older gentlemen, and that most of her relationships have been pretty screwed up. /metametameta

Also good call on not doing it, because it might or might have not caused minor wank.

You...You know Buffy is a fictional character, right?
