The website that started it all!

Talk about secrets that still jump out at you, your thoughts on the site, etc.

Secrets that stood out to me:

1. One where someone's family thinks they died on 9/11. I always wonder why they let their family believe they're dead. Trauma from witnessing the attacks? Trying to start over? Toxic family they might as well have been dead to?

2. One where someone didn't watch their little sister as promised, and she drowned in the pool. Can't imagine that guilt.

3. Someone submitted a secret that looked like it could've been about my middle school - the weird thing is, when I looked at the comments, all these people were saying they thought it was their middle school (and from the sounds of it, we didn't all go to the same school). O_o Did they just look like most 11-13 year olds?

The 9/11 one is literally the only one I can remember. I always assumed they just disappeared because they took it as an opportunity to start over.

AYRT - Yeah, it just seems like a very harsh way of doing so... but perhaps they were troubled enough that it was the best way. Or they just did and it was too late to come back.

That 9/11 one has always really haunted me.

I don't see the point of ones where people's faces are blurred out. Like, they're still going to recognize furniture, landmarks, clothing, etc.

And I really don't get ones where nothing's blurred. Unless they're stock images?

I saw one once where a woman hid a spider in her sister's bed as a prank. The spider was venomous and bit her sister, who lost her leg. That shit stuck with me.

A few have made me cry.

Also, I saw one that said "I no longer care where I'm going, as long as she's riding shotgun." It's not the best sentiment but at the exact moment I saw it it felt like a sign. I needed it.

... wow, that's scary. Poor woman.

Well, there you go. :)

I know, the ones that are all about insurmountable guilt (like the above mentioned one where someone didn't babysit and their side drowned) fucking haunt me

That spider secret is the only one I could remember off the top of my head. It's incredibly distressing.

I was just thinking of the spider one, after anon's first comment with the secret about not watching their little sister as promised and the sister drowning.

In a similar vein, there was a secret once about an older sister who'd kissed her younger brother on the mouth when they were kids & she was convinced that that's why he's gay now.

I remember he posted a secret about abuse with a picture of a hole in someone's door and other people replied with their pictures. I had a door like that when I was a kid. It made me feel not good that other people had similar experiences but less alone I guess.

I went to the live event once in the city. It was interesting.

The secret I really remember said something like, I knew you loved me when you danced with me in front of everyone even though you hate dancing/don't know how to dance.

I find it sometimes disturbing, and I'm concerned by the sensational aspects of it. Like, are we just gawking at other people's pain?? Trying to regain some feeling in numb emotions by seeing other people's pain/lies/wrongdoings?

Sometimes they are thoughtful and important, I think, but I do feel like sometimes it steers into rubbernecking trainwreck territory.

Seriously there are probalby hundred to chose from each week, so they don't always have to be the most sensational possible...
