If Trump wins, how screwed are Americans? How screwed is the world?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I really wonder this. :/

There are people who say that Trump's political claims are an act (since they contradict his earlier stances and behavior), that even he didn't think he'd win, and while I don't think they're exactly right, I hope by some chances they are... although I dunno what that would mean should he win.

Personally, I don't think he'll win. But I'm worried about what will happen if he will. What scares me the most is his lack of understanding of foreign policy and his lack of caring about his lack of knowledge. He'd lose us all our allies. Also, the way he seems to say whatever the lowest common denominator thinks at any given moment is scary.

That being said, presidents have limited power, so I don't think he'd completely destroy the country. But he could do some real damage.

I've been reminding a lot of people of the president's limited power when they're scared. And of what this country has already survived. I don't think Trump would be worse than some of what's come before.

In all honesty he probably wouldn't be able to get a lot done because the House and Senate wouldn't approve most of his crazy measures - even Republicans feel alienated by him, and half the crazy shit he spews isn't even "Republican".

I mean things will still be fucked but just as I don't think Bernie Sanders would be able to successfully make loads of radical changes, I don't think Trump could either

But he'd make the rest of the world hate us, more. Especially the parts of the world we're trying to convince we don't judge for their religion.

My guess is it'll probably be a repeat of the last 4 years of the Bush administration. The country won't end, but a lot of damage will be done in spite of the Republicans distancing themselves from the president (and in many cases, because of it.) I don't see him winning twice.

Trump's understanding of foreign policy is very weak, however, even compared to the Bush administration.

Well, Bush won twice...

I agree with you though, I don't think he'll win twice and I don't think it's likely (thankfully) that he'll win once.

I feel people need to remember that although trump won the republican nomination, voting in the primaries is a lot lower than the general election so it's really hard to say for sure how many people are gonna vote for him as president.

I mean, not totally screwed. We're not going to all die. But he would be a very bad president, in policy and in administration, and electing him would mean unleashing violent fascist political forces which would have a hugely negative effect on American democracy.

Many Americans are not going to be screwed. However, Trump probably isn't going to be much of a firebreak against our completely bugfuck congress. So the big losers are going to be:

* anyone who depends on the last round of health care reform, as incomplete as that was
* LGBT people: expect reinstatement of DOMA, DADT, and a federal religious liberty law modeled on the North Carolina, Tennessee, and Mississippi acts
* women who need abortion or birth control services

I don't know how the foreign policy shit would play out.

ugh that's a good point about health care. It's currently a work in progress, an awkward middle ground that's not much improvement on what we had, and needs more reform to be very useful. :/

Also, immigrants.

Also, really, the whole economy. If another DEFUND AMERICA sort of thing comes up under President Trump, or a debt limit crisis, one shudders to think of the outcome.

Some of those they wouldn't be able to get past the Supreme Court on. Even if Trump appoints a hyper conservative, the court got rid of DOMA and DADT while Scalia was still there.

RBG and Tony Kennedy are both very, very old.

Also I feel like Kennedy probably wants to retire - I have a feeling that he kind of views the gay marriage decisions as a career capstone - but he probably wouldn't do it if Trump were President.

DADT was removed by statute (sneaked through congress near the end of Obama's last term). DOMA could be reinstated using a different legal argument not addressed by Obergefell.

I think he will escalate conflict in the Middle East out of carelessness. His complete inability to be diplomatic about anything is really scary when you think about him being in the driver's seat of the American military and political conglomerate.

I don't think his outlandish platforms like building a wall and making Mexico pay for it (lol) will ever pass though because Congress. I do think he'll promote bad morale and have a negative effect on American culture, though, including constantly validating the regressive mindsets of his supporters. :/

As an aside, I like the joke I heard recently: "If Trump wins, I will go to Mexico instead of Canada. It's warmer, and there'll be a wall separating me from Trump." (Personally I will start to look more seriously into going back to Costa Rica.)

I don't know that any president could totally screw the US or the world over all on their lonesome. But I do worry about Trump. Like, I'm voting for Bernie in the primaries, but if Hillary became the first Madame President of the US I'd think "ooh boy, another four years minimum of the rich getting richer while the poor get poorer," and get on with my life. If Trump won, even if none of the Republicans took his side (and some will), I would be scared, if for no other reason that he seems to think hate is a viable foreign policy and his being president legitimizes the views of a lot of really disgusting people.

I think it's kind of a useful disaster. The USA as global hegemon is not so good. Let Trump make us look like the fools we actually are, and lose America's allies. Let's enter into decline!

Probably less screwed than we would have been with Cruz.
