Since when is struggling against gender roles and feeling that your assigned "place" isn't something that you want for yourself not a defined character?

This literally describes 80% of my Chinese friends, and from what I gather it describes a lot of trans and nonconforming folks as well.

Is the struggle not real?

I've never seen Mulan and have always wondered how it would stack up to "White Tigers," Maxine Hong Kingston's story about Fa Mu Lan from The Woman Warrior.
