Re: Professional atheists
(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)I don't consider myself a "militant atheist" a la Dawkins, but I disagree with this. I do NOT owe any religious beliefs respect, and I feel religion can and should be criticized. Obviously that doesn't mean randomly going up to someone and freaking out on them, but I have zero reason to humor or respect Bronze Age mythology that has systematically been used to cause oppression, fear, and the denial of science. I don't owe beliefs respect. I can respect people, not I will not "respect" religion.

Re: Professional atheists
What do you mean when you say "respect" in this context?
Re: Professional atheists
(Anonymous) 2016-05-11 12:12 am (UTC)(link)Do you respect Scientology? Cults (and religions) that advocate girls thirteen or younger being married to older men? Beliefs that advocate killing gay people, or people who don't follow the same religion?
If you answer yes to everything, then I don't know what to tell you. If you say no, then you'll understand what I mean. I have every right to say a religion's beliefs are fucking stupid and no, I don't think I should bend over backwards to ~respects~ beliefs I find offensive, backwards or nonsensical.
Re: Professional atheists
You definitely gave me a vibe of mocking and looking down on individual people who are religious in your previous comment. If I misread that, then, good, I'm glad to be wrong about that :)
