Yeah, I keep hearing people say this, but every debate transcript I've read, he talks about backing off foreign defense. He's actually close to Bernie that way, but for different reasons. Trump is a terribly proud man, and I think it angers him that America pays more than its fair share in defense. He's criticized Bush for Iraq and thinks it was a mistake.

I think part of his approach is the sense that simple overwhelming force will be cheaper in the long run because more effective. I think that is wrong. Another part of it is backing off of active American commitment in favor of things like increased bombing. I think that is also pretty bad as a foreign policy approach. So it's things like that. He does have a weird combination of disengagement and bombing everyone but it's a pretty bad combination to me.

Regarding Trump's business career - as a business career, I think it's largely a failure. Where it's been a success is largely as a publicity career. He's much more successful and made more money out of celebrity than he did out of business. And also, if you look at his business career - he failed constantly. He made fucking terrible deals. There's a piece, I think from the New York Times, and it came out in the early 90s so it's hardly politically biased, about his purchase of the Plaza Hotel, and you can look it up - he got played like a fucking chump, almost entirely because of his personal pride. He negotiated like an idiot. It's really hard for me to take him seriously as a businessman. He made abominably stupid moves.

I agree that the mainstream media is very bad in many was, and that our system of governance has many flaws. But the cure, in this case, is worse than the disease. Yeah, sure, the media made Trump - but how in God's name is that a defense of Trump? Yes, he says outrageous things - that's not good! That's part of what makes him bad! He says and does outrageous, often stupid, things without thinking of the consequence. That is a bad quality for a President to have! Really bad!

And I don't think that you can dismiss his followers so easily. No, you're not voting for them, but that part of American society will absolutely be emboldened by a Trump win. That's a consequence that has to be reckoned with, an effect of voting for him. However heavily it weighs with you, it does exist. And it's consequential for American politics to have those people in the mainstream and emboldened to have those views as part of the political process. It's really bad.

I really don't see what the flaws of Islam as a religion have to do with Donald Trump so I'm frankly not really sure what to say to that. In conclusion, Donald Trump is a very bad candidate and would make a very bad president and you shouldn't vote for him.

Yeah. *sigh* I hear you on all of this, believe me. I've read that article on his weird, self-destructive business megolomania during the 80s. His pride leads him to do reckless things. But his unsettling points are also his selling points. His pride isn't just personal. He has a fierce pride of country, and I think we need that right now. Our government has been selling America out to foreign interests long enough. We desperately need to address trade, illegal immigration, and foreign defense because these are enormous strains on our economy and the working class (those people the left is meant to represent!), and these are top priorities to him. And I can't be as concerned about a Trump presidency as all of you because the President just doesn't have that much power. Congress holds most of the power in the US, and Trump would be dealing with a Congress that deplores him on both sides. In fact, I suspect Trump's candidacy alone is going to tip the scales towards Democrat in the Senate, which is a good thing. I think we need Trump as a check and balance right now. I think Congress needs a wake-up call.

In regards to his supporters: if you will take a hard look at the left, you will find his protesters have become equally as vile. Those are the people who have caused me to move away from the left. The fact that the left refuses to acknowledge this sort of behavior is infuriating. That's why I mentioned Islam. Yes, a number of Trump supporters are racist, but the left could stand to be a bit more open about the dangers that Islam poses to western values rather than screaming "racist!" at anyone who raises concerns. I do not want what is happening in Europe to happen to America.

Thank you for debating the points without talking down to me or getting snarky or calling me names. You're a true liberal.
