When did Ed leave his kids? Did I miss something?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a while, but I think Ed and Al leave to research alchemy or something. I don't see how that means he abandoned his kids. Someone might travel a lot for business, but that doesn't mean that person abandoned their kids.

Yeah, not seeing how "travels away from home for long periods sometimes" is equivalent to "only said goodbye to his kids because they woke up while he was trying to sneak out, then stayed away and impossible to contact for literal years."

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I thought he traveled before coming back home and having kids with Winry.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the picture of them with the kids is years after he and Al have traveled the world and studied. It's never even implied that he traveled after the kids were born.

Yeah, OP misunderstood the timeline there. Ed went for a research trip, then came back a year or so later, then he and Winry got married and had children eventually. The photo montage at the end featured things that happened after the story ended.

The final scene with Ed and Winry at the train station takes place before the kids in the photo are born. According to Arakawa's timeline, Ed doesn't even stay away a year, returns to Winry, and she gives birth to their son shortly thereafter.

I think Arakawa's extensive timeline ends there (except for telling us when Ed dies), and I don't think she mentions Ed leaving his family for any extended length of time.

This is sort of tangential to the secret, but...

I never liked Ed and Winry as a romantic couple. Their interaction always seemed more sibling-like than romantic to me, and I felt like them getting together at the end wasn't a natural progression of their characters, but more of a "they get together because that is the Way You Have A Happy Ending."

I... Sort of agree with this, depending on my mood. Sometimes I do really like them together and it makes me feel happy and fuzzy, but other times I much, much prefer seeing them as the best of friends.

I totally agree! I've always disliked Ed/Winry as a romantic pairing. I just can't see them as anything other than siblings. That part of the ending felt really forced, to me.

What are you talking about??? There's zero implication that Ed leaves his kids behind.

He travels a bit BEFORE he marries Winry, but...
