Justin Bieber is remarkably on fire lately. Both Love Yourself and Sorry are surprisingly enjoyable considering how much I've disliked him historically. It helps, I think, that those were both collaborations

I haven't heard Sorry yet. But I've always felt that Bieber gets a lot more hate than he's actually earned. His music isn't any worse than any other pop song, and while he has definitely done some douchy/idiotic/dangerous things, he's not actually being any more idiotic than a lot of teens his age, poor judgement comes with the territory. It's just that we see it more because a) vicious feedback loop that comes from getting famous when you're a teen and it going to your head along with normal 'I am invincible' teen behavior and b) other teenage boys don't have 24/7 stalkers with cameras to capture their idiocy.

Hate was an exaggeration. He's just been fairly emblematic of an artist whose entire musical oeuvre is designed not to appeal to me and thus I feel comfortable dismissing his music out of hand as something I wouldn't want to listen to. But then Sorry and Love Yourself (LOVE thevideo for that, btw) came along and I'm genuinely interested in what he's going to do next.

This is my attitude on him, too. I certainly hope, for his sake if nothing else, he manages to rein in his reckless behavior as he gets older, simply because it just always makes me sad to see people who got famous as teens flaming out so spectacularly as they become adults (Britney Spears, Amanda Bynes, to name a couple other notable examples). The nature of being a celebrity can really fuck someone so young up if they don't have the right people looking out for them, unfortunately :/.

But beyond that, yeah, I'm pretty neutral on the guy overall.

I don't think he's done anything completely off the walls lately, I really think he's mellowed out a lot. Of course, I don't obsessively follow him so there could be something I'm missing.
