Can we stop blaming everything on tumblr jesus christ.

Most of it is probably coming from the fact whenever someone being raped comes up in the news, there's always tons of people accusing the rape victim of lying or calling her a slut. Lol Bill Cosby and Stubenville anyone?

Those two aren't really equatable, considering the Cosby accusers waited decades, withdrew their claims, and then came back over ten years later. You have to admit that's incredibly suspicious and irrational.

Though even then it's far from something that only affects women. Male rape is treated as an acceptable joke in popular culture, and that's disgusting.

I never once said that they were lying or that I thought they were lying. I believe that he did do so to at least some of them. However, you have to understand WHY people would doubt them, and what makes it different from the other case. When gobs of people come forward to report a crime YEARS after the fact, and they do it at the same time, you honestly have to look at it with an especially critical eye.

Citing what happens to male victims isn't bullshit or rape apology. You were saying that female victims get blamed and disbelieved, and I said it wasn't limited to women. That's not bullshit at all. That's just showing that it isn't a gendered thing. And how you get that I was somehow apologizing for the actions of criminals by pointing out how bad things are for their victims...just, HOW did you come to that conclusion?

When people are specifically talking about rape as experienced by women, which includes they way women in particular are treated when they publicly accuse someone of rape, and you shoehorn in a "but it's a man problem too!"...I wouldn't call it restructuring the entire conversation, just an attempt to derail.

Rape as it affects men is another really big problem and it also gets talked about a lot on F!S. But it's socially a slightly different problem because of how people react to male and female rape victims. It's an enormous problem, with men often not being taken seriously at all, told they must have enjoyed it and it's not rape (if it was a female rapist), or treated as feminized and therefore inferior if it was a male rapist who penetrated them - it's just not the same problem as the one that's being talked about here so why bring it up, unless we're talking about rape in general? This thread started from a secret where a FEMALE OP talked about her experiences of fearing rape because of being FEMALE.

But again: the way men and women experience rape is not identical; sure, there's some overlap, but because of the way genders are separated and treated as entirely different entities by society, they are also generally treated differently when it comes to rape. And, again: this is in the context of rape as experienced by women, because OP specifically said they fear rape due to being female.

Part of the reason we have those different issues with different victims is because we gender discussion of rape rather than talk about them side by side.

I really do not think this is a significant factor, because in general the people who apologize for rape and promote rape culture are not the same people actively trying to stop it and therefore having these kinds of discussions.

Based on both the psychology of victims and the poor prosecution rates for rape, not really. Especially given the person they're accusing is a beloved celebrity. I mean, no one's suggesting the Jimmy Saville victims who came forward after that broke are lying - at least they're not *now*.

da, but I think there's a difference when the person being accused is just an average Joe versus a celebrity. As sad as it is, there ARE people who make up false accusations of things against celebrities for attention, money, what have you, so it's understandable why some people might be more suspicious in that case as compared to when the person being accused isn't famous.

Even so, if you're going to withdraw a claim, why place it in the first place? Once you file an accusation, you need to stick with it. Anyone should be able to tell how it impacts their credibility to withdraw a claim, especially en masse.

It's not really about personal credibility though? And there are definitely legal and social reasons one would withdraw a claim? Pressure being one of them, another (more practical and concrete) being that you realize the legal fees are going to outweigh anything you might legally gain from pursuing it, especially years after it happened, and/or the social costs that unfortunately exist for pursuing that claim.

Why on Earth would dozens of women band together and make false claims against someone only to give up partway through? Doesn't that seem like way more of a stretch to you? It does to me.
