It really depends on the character honestly. I run into this a lot with Tolkien fics, which surprises me because I don't think a lot of the characters have names that "nick" well. Tyelpe for Celebrimbor/Tyelperinquar is one I do like. If I see Melkor called Mel, though, instant backbutton. And same with Mai for Mairon, though I do think Melkor might use more possessive pet names. And the less said of the fic I saw calling Legolas "Leggy" the better.

I think Silm/LotR needs an extra step for nicknames of looking up words lists and putting together something that has a relevant meaning. Like when I came up with a nickname for Celebrimbor besides "Telpë" (I usually go with Telperinquar - without the Y), I manage to put together "Pityanillë" which meant "Little Silver". Given that his name means "Silver Fist", it seems to fit something someone who saw him as a baby might call him.

The problem is most fans don't even bother to learn that all names in either Elven language have meanings - in fact practically all name in Tolkien have meanings, and just keep working with modern RL conventions that don't fit what JRR created in Middle Earth.

True. And ooo, I really like that. That's adorable. I can totally see his father and uncles calling him that.
