Aw, you don't like Stiles calling Derek 'Der'? A nickname I can't imagine anyone using for the name Derek ever?

In other words, I agree wholeheartedly. I actually stopped reading a fic recently because the author had one character using an overly excessive amount of pet names.

Don't we all buddy (except obviously not since people write it but seriously... I know so many people who hate stupid ooc nicknames and yet they are so pervasive)

My pet hate is Spike calling Xander "whelp". Never does it in canon; does it constantly in fanfic.

I feel this so much, nicknames that don't even appear in the canon are just nonsensical and I find overuse of pet names cringey in fic.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an auto back button issue for me. I don't mind pet names, in moderation, but nonsensical shortened names are a general indicator that yhe story will fail in other ways too.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
They're dumb, I don't like them either.

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-05-14 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It really depends on the character honestly. I run into this a lot with Tolkien fics, which surprises me because I don't think a lot of the characters have names that "nick" well. Tyelpe for Celebrimbor/Tyelperinquar is one I do like. If I see Melkor called Mel, though, instant backbutton. And same with Mai for Mairon, though I do think Melkor might use more possessive pet names. And the less said of the fic I saw calling Legolas "Leggy" the better.

I think pet names can fit any canon. Maybe you don't like pet names, but how people act in an intimate relationship often has little to do with how they act while fighting bad guys or hanging out with friends. How do you know?
Of course, I love pet names... ;)

I hate it when people put "Y" at the end of a nickname (For instance Slendy for Slenderman.)

It doesn't sound cute to me. All I can imagine is it being said in a grating baby-talk voice and it just kills it for me.

Omg, we are twins, here. I hate it so much! Especially when the nickname makes no sense/isn't one that is ever used in 'real life', either. Like Derek (TW) calling Laura 'Lo' - has anyone in the history of ever called a person named Laura 'Lo'?

Seconded. Nothing will make me back out of a fic faster than a stupid non-canon nickname.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily what you're talking about, but I just can't read APH fics (that aren't specifically human AUs) that refer to characters as non-canon names. Especially when they're popular fanon names. We all know we're here to read about personified countries fucking, damn it! We don't have to skirt around the issue!

I have a cat named Lady Loki (Like every other nerd who also has cats) and her nickname is Lolo. I can't imagine that ever being used as a name for Marvel Loki except as an insult though.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I absolutely hate made-up nicknames. Unfortunately I'm currently in the fandom where _everyone_ uses a certain nickname all the bloody time. I have to safe fics and edit them to read without cringing every other sentence and it's really annoying.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I also hate the reverse, where a character calls another character a longer version of their name that they never call them in canon, in an attempt to capture more formal speech patterns. Like Castiel calling Sam "Samuel" or Bobby "Robert" in fic or Hannibal calling Will "William."

Oh man I read a HP fic once that gave virtually every character a cutesy nickname including a bunch of antagonists who magically turned out to be sympathetic of course

it was awful, and I agree with you

Yeah, it feels really out of character to use nicknames that are never used in canon. It is a failure to capture the characters' voices. I don't mind pet names all that much if the fic is putting two characters into a non-canon relationship, since who is to say they wouldn't call each other "honey" or something? Not nicknames, though.

I'm actually a little back and forth on this.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes you shorten a name of someone you grow close to, even if you generally aren't one for nicknames or even give them a bizarre petname. And it can easily start with the desire to annoy or irritate and then grow to become something fond. It can and does happen in real life, so I don't really see the problem with in fic. Of course it can be done poorly or in an out of character manner. If there is a long canon with lots of character interaction and the characters are already close and they never call each other by nicknames/petnames, then yeah, that doesn't work if nicknames/petnames are all over a fic.

I think when an author finds themselves going way outside of canon, it's either something everyone is doing because it's fun...or they're taking the steps towards being ready to move on to writing original fiction.

Obviously people can do what they want w/ fanfic but maybe the use of lots of non-canon details and nicknames, changes to many things...sometimes it means they're working up towards writing more of their own stuff? Maybe gaining control of skills and ideas, etc.?

I always find myself hoping they get the strength to take those actual next steps into making their own worlds and characters. :)
