Normally I have no problem with labels but that's one that I've never adopted even though it fits me. I don't even have a problem with it since I know plenty of reasonable people who use it but I still don't use it even though there are few things in the world I want less than a child.

Yeah...a lot of people (not the majority, I'd imagine, but very much the noisy minority) use "child free" as code for "I'm so entitled I think children existing in public places is a personal affront." So I understand why even someone with 0 desire for a child would still avoid that label.

My point is that that's not why I don't use it. I mean, I call myself a Christian and a feminist despite all the assholes in both those groups. I have no problem taking a label that has bad associations in some circles. I don't know why I've avoided this one.

Maybe because Christian and feminist have good associations too, whereas child free has kind of come to stand for "jerk"? Idk. Sometimes labels that fit just fine technically don't sit right personally. That's cool too

AYRT - Exactly. I actually LIKE kids. I do wish they'd behave better in public places sometimes, but even then, often it's the parents. I don't expect a two year old to have mastered social skills yet, I expect their mom who's my age to have mastered them.

This is why badly-behaved kids make me so mad. It's not the kid's fault for not knowing better and acting like a kid, it's the parent's for not teaching them what is and isn't acceptable.

Sure, but when a child is being a brat and the parent is doing nothing to indicate to the child that that sort of behavior is unacceptable, that's not cool. Kids will misbehave, yes, but it is the job of the parents to teach them not to.

Obviously you're not wrong, I just get antsy when people assume "noisy/loud kid = bad parent"....sometimes shit is just hitting the fan as you walk by, man.

Well, there's also a big difference between a noisy/loud kid and a kid who is actively misbehaving. Kids get upset and cry or throw tantrums sometimes, it happens. That's not anyone's fault. But when a child is doing something like going around and pulling things off the shelf at a store, I absolutely blame the parent for not stopping them and telling them that's not okay.

This. Also if a kid is actively sneaking into the bedrooms into someone's private drawers, and then later tells mommy that the owner of the room wouldn't let them have the candy they found in the private drawers and the mommy tries to side with them...uh, yeah. Because how dare their precious entitled poopsie not get that big hershey's with almonds hidden in a woman's underwear drawer for emergency.

I feel so bad for those kids, they are going to have a rude awakening indeed when they try to join the adult world.
