In my 5 years in NYC, no one has ever blown cigarette smoke in my face. Vaping folks don't always extend the same courtesy.

I think the fact that it's still new and allowed indoors and shit means people can be so so rude about it. I had a classmate (this man is in his 30s!!) who routinely vaped in class even tho everyone wanted him to stop.

I find vape runoff just as unpleasant as smoking. But I also grew up completely surrounded by smokers.

Is it as dangerous for you, though? I mean, the big issue with smoking isn't the unpleasantness, it is that second hand smoking is actually more dangerous that smoking itself and no one should be allowed to hurt my health just for their habit. Is vaping bad for those who don't do it but just get it second hand? I don't know, I don't know much about vaping.

Nah, e-cigs aren't the paragon of safety they've been portrayed as, but they don't appear to pose a huge health risk for second hand users. That don't make it pleasant to have that shit blown in my face by kids on the subway platform for random Shawn from my fieldwork class :P

Ew, yes, no, I get that. I just find smokers who blow in people's faces or where other people are worse because they know they are actually risking the person's health, they just don't care.

When I was a smoker I was always so careful about not bugging other people with it at all--and then of course end up with somebody else's smoke in my face, lol. In smokers' meager defense, if you're used to being around other smokers it can be harder to adjust. Still not cool.

Yah, I have asthma and allergies, so I'm particularly sensitive to smoke. Just a bit of smoke can trigger my asthma. So I get especially annoyed at smokers who don't pay attention. Although, some just don't care. One guy once actually glared at me when I started coughing when he blew smoke in my direction.

People are, and always have been, scary entitled. What a dick.

It depends on the scent, IMO. My husband uses menthol scent, and that's no big. Plus holy shit do I prefer kissing "minty-fresh" over "ashes." But going into the vape store is like having your face smooshed with fruity car-fresheners.

No one has ever blown either directly into my face. But you often get blow back from the wind and such. At least with vaping, I can get the pleasant smell of cherries as opposed to the lung destroying smell of ashes.

And many places around here have bans on vaping in the same places as smoking.

I personally find that synthetic smell really unpleasant, but that's a personal thing of course :•)

I agree vaping > smoking, but the pretentious culture of (some!) vape folks drives me up the wall.

I expect they are emulating the previously pretentious culture of the "cool smoker". They'll grow out of it eventually.

You're probably right. I just have a short fuse for a man in his thirties making a huge deal of his vaping in the middle of class, and he's not the only guy of that type I've known. Not that everyone is like that at all, it's just a "culture," one avoided in part by cig smokers because smoking cigarettes was entirely ubiquitous for so long.

I've never understood what's supposed to look so cool about it. People might as well be sucking on a crazy straw for all it does for me.

The culture is stupid, yes, but vaping means my SO no longer smokes after years and years of it, and has gone from vape oil with nicotine to vape oil with the teeniest amount of nicotine in it, and is ready to go to none. So it's a good thing, when nobody acts like a douche about it.

(It's not legal indoors anywhere where I am, which is middle-of-the-state Missouri. At least that I know of.)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Secondhand vapor, being non-carcinogenic, is objectively less unpleasant than secondhand smoke. Cancer is endgame-tier unpleasant. Vaping in class is like chewing gum in class and should have the same legal status.

I also grew up with smokers, and I don't want any bullshit getting between them and an alternative that will protect their families from health problems.

Nah I ain't anti-vape a'tall. More anti-self-importance lol

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mean the "fuck everyone around me and their health" mentality? Self-importance isn't what you think it is (or what anti-positivity conservatives try to make you believe). It's just believing that you matter and it's good to care for yourself.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not at all the same as chewing gum, and I don't think that's my extreme aversion to the smell talking.
I agree it shouldn't have all the same restrictions as smoking, but nobody should be doing it in confined spaces that other people are forced to share with you.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
No, vaping in class is like wearing strong perfume in class. It's gross and a migraine trigger for me. (Smoking is worse, though, and I would much prefer people vape, just not in a confined space.)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Someone with asthma or other lung problems is going to be just as triggered by vape smoke as they will be by cigarette smoke. It's not the carcinogens that irritate their lungs, it's the smoke itself.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-05-14 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, that's unexpected for NYC. Here there are fuckers that will smoke at bus stops and not give a single shit that they are blowing smoke downwind into a stroller, and it's not even half as populous.

It's fucked up.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I've had assholes blow cigarette smoke directly into my face.

I ended a friendship over that once. Apparently I couldn't take a joke. We'll see who's laughing in 10 years when you have lung cancer.

My dad's friend once blew cigar smoke directly in my face and I think I cried. (I was small)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
In my 40 years in New York City, I have to breathe obnoxious cigarette smoke everywhere I go. They may not deliberately blow it in my face, but you can't help but smell it as you walk by them hanging out in front of building or as they walk in front of you and the smoke drifts by. Weed smoke smells even worse.

At least vape smoke doesn't smell bad.
