I would blame the systems in place that don't always allow workers to take days off sick when they need to before I would blame the people.

is that really a common thing though? i've worked a bunch of food service and retail jobs and they would all either send you home if you showed up sick (because they didn't want someone sick helping customers or making food) or they would have you find someone to switch shifts with and if you couldn't, one of the managers would cover for you.

We've had this discussion of f!s before (I kind of assume this thread is just to start wank) and there were several people with examples of times they couldn't take off.

There are definitely nice bosses out there who will let you go home, but there are also some not nice ones. Plus a lot of illnesses take a long time to work through the system, so even if you're allowed a day that doesn't mean you won't be contagious/at full health when you go back to work. Anyone who thinks someone ALWAYS needs to stay home isn't understanding reality.

see in my experience it was only them being nice some of the time, the rest of the time it was that they thought having sick employees reflected badly on them or the store. one of my bosses was a total asshole but he would still tell people to go home if they were sick because he didn't want customers thinking he was an asshole.

I could see that but I still know it can vary by the boss and the industry, if a boss can put you somewhere where you aren't dealing with customers, some will take that option rather then letting you go home.

Sometimes going into work doesn't even have anything to do with how nice the boss is or not, if a company/store/whathaveyou is too small that they can't get a shift covered, bosses will make people stay. I've encountered a lot of sick salespeople and known a lot of friends who went into work sick before just because a shift could not be covered.

that makes sense. i've never worked for a really small place so that's never been an issue but i can see how it could be if there aren't many employees who could cover for someone.

Also, imagine if you *are* the boss and you get sick. I've definitely been in situations where if I can't work because I'm sick, then it's impossible for anyone else to work, either, and there's no backup.

Some places do allow that, yes...but most of the ones I and people I know have worked at only allow for a select amount of sick days. If you go beyond that allotted amount of sick days available to you, then you do run the risk of it having a negative impact on your job.

oh yeah, i didn't mean to imply that they gave you unlimited sick days, just that it wasn't seen as a big deal for you to call out every once in a while for illness.

Oh, yeah, I understand what you were getting at :). And you're right-if someone's lucky enough to only get sick every great once in a while at work, then yeah, most jobs are going to be pretty cool with that.

I've had friends have their hours cut way back because they dared to stay home sick, although it seems more common that they get in trouble for staying home to take care of sick family, usually small children.
