The courts made the right decision.

The people who it would most effect the most, in the politest possible terms, are pretty screwed anyway? If you do not have parents who are looking out for your education you have across the board worse outcomes, and a week or two wouldn't effect that.

However, if you have parents who have high expectations of you and the support structure in place, it won't make a real difference. And you could miss out on some hugely beneficial experiences. This isn't just theoretical for me. My parents are travelling to Japan for a work trip, and were looking to take my little sister with them but this was a real thorn.

As someone at the top of the curve academically, is an extra week of busy work going to be as beneficial as a month experiencing an entirely different culture on the other side of the world? Clearly not, but that's a decision they looked to take out of my parents hands, who are in a better position to make then them.

The court made the wrong decision and every parent and kid believes them to be top of the curve. School is more than just "busy work" and it is more than just rote learning.

Actual academic achievement within the confines of the system is fairly measurable within the current system fam. This is only so pen to interpretation.

And a significant amount of work during the schooling day is simply busywork and rote learning. Nobody said it was entirely that - but the system just is not set up to be that fine tuned. You just can't when catering to such a wide variety of abilities and needs. And it is not so designed that a student cannot catch up for a missed lesson now in each class now and then.
