What country are you in, we can point you to your national beekeeping association who will be able to advise you more fully.

I'm hearing this in Eddie Izzard's voice, omg.

It depends on your location, but seriously, google for your city/state, because chances are there's a local organization of beekeepers and they're generally enthusiastic people who like to share their knowledge.

Pain management question

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-05-15 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so my doctor gave me 800 mg of ibuprofin and then tilenol with codeine. It barely seems to touch the pain. I know I shouldn't be up and about or anything, but even getting up to use the restroom is agony. Is there anything I can do to make getting up and down easier when I have to?

Re: Pain management question

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
How are you laying down?

Also, this might help? How to get and out of bed after surgery. https://youtu.be/LkFMRm_lO3Q

You may also need to walk more. If you are not moving much, you are probably stiffening up. Usually after surgery they suggest you get on your feet every now and again unless you are specifically told otherwise.

They didn't really tell me anything. The problem is that I'm a pretty big woman. And the surgery was in my stomach area. So every time I move I get stabbing pain inside. I pretty much can't move. Maybe I would move more if they'd given me something stronger, but right now I can barely handle just getting up for the restroom.

I'll check that video out, thanks.

Well, first of all you shouldn't be trying to just sit up if you've had abdominal surgery. They should have at least taught you the correct method of entering/exiting a bed:

1. Roll on your side so that your arm is under you.
2. Get a good, firm grip on the side of the bed so you don't fall off.
3. Slide your legs over the edge of the bed.
4. Let the momentum carry you into a sitting position.

And yes, you should be up and about somewhat. Don't try to push it too hard (to the bathroom and back a few times for the first few days is fine), but getting yourself up and walking greatly decreases the chances of clotting in your lower extremities, which is a life-threatening surgical complication. Multiple studies have shown that appropriate post-surgical physical activity also increases circulation, speeds healing, decreases pain perception, and prevents muscle loss associated with prolonged bed rest. Aim to get yourself up and moving on short walks at least twice per day as soon as you can tolerate it and try to increase their duration every time (e.g. start with 20 paces more than your bathroom journey, then 30, then 40... etc.)

If your pain continues to be above a 5-6 on the pain scale, or worsens, seek immediate medical attention. Otherwise, experiencing a certain amount of discomfort after surgery is to be expected.

Thanks. This is really helpful. No, they didn't tell me any of this. I guess probably because it was just a laproscopic surgery, so maybe they weren't expecting as much pain as I have? IDK. Anyway, walking around is actually all right (painful a bit but bearable). It is the getting up that is difficult. But I'm going to try this like you said and see if it helps.

Can you be too laid back?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I've realized recently that I don't react to stressful situations or surprises like anyone else I am around. My family is always panicking when something happens but I am just like, "Whatever. I know storm sirens are going off but I need to grab my phone and a snack before we go to the shelter." *casually walks to room and then to shelter*

I would define too laid back as someone who never gets visibly excited or passionate about anything, who can't ever give strong opinions about anything, and who constantly expresses disinterest with everything.

That's the definition of apathy. Laid back means being unconcerned and unworried, not disinterested/aloof.

Yes. Definitively, yes. Psychological studies have borne this out for years. Fear is a healthy process, so long as it's the right amount of fear. Too much or too little is generally a detrimental state to be in.

Fear is what our ancestors relied on to go, "Oh fuck, that's a bear, I should GTFO at my soonest possible convenience." Usually these days we just use it to motivate us to do well on tests (fun fact: test nerves are actually beneficial! Getting pre test jitters makes for better recall since the area responsible for the fear response - the amygdala - is so very tightly linked to the area responsible for short term memory storage and activation - the hippocampus).

To use a pertinent example, not enough of a decisive reaction to a life threatening situation means you're way more likely to be the person in the tsunami video going out to gape at the "really low tide" and then not running away fast enough to escape drowning.

What should I watch?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-05-15 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I really need a movie or TV show to watch. I have access to Netflix and Amazon Prime. I'd like to watch a horror movie without a lot of gore (I've seen most though) or a thriller.

Some things I have been looking at:
Eyes Wide Shut (I like Tom Cruise)
I Saw The Devil (It has a pretty high star rating on Netflix for me)
Mystic River (I have heard this is good)
In Bruges (keep seeing it, I like Rocknrolla and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang)
Ex Machina (just because)

Shows
Grimm
Boardwalk Empire
Orphan Black

I've watched that one, too! It is fantastic (it has the main guy from The Wire!).

You should totally watch A Young Doctor's Notebook. It's basically a miniseries thriller/comedy starring Daniel Radcliffe and Jon Hamm!

Have you seen The Orphanage yet? I think it's available on Amazon Prime. A young family, a run-down orphanage, the adopted son acting strangely. It sounds cliched but it's also a very good movie with minimal gore.

In Bruges is definitely worth watching - especially if you enjoyed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
