LOL true. And I always find "pretentious" a weird criticism when that's what they were going for much of the time. It grew on me, too, I was just sort of admiring but ??? the first time. But it's definitely not for everybody.

I don't think it's a weird criticism, tbh. It doesn't mean the show failed at what it intended, it just says that the person who disliked it, didn't like what the show wanted to be. I don't like rollercoasters because I don't like moving fast and the hills and loops give me motion sickness. That doesn't mean I fail to grasp the point of rollercoasters, it's just that if someone asked me why I didn't like them, that would be the reasoning behind my personal opinion.

Their reasoning is fine, I just think it's weird that "pretentious" is this huge storytelling taboo for some people, especially around here. It goes right along with "unrealistic" for a lot of TV fans, despite TV being inherently unrealistic. People like what they like and that's great, but there are infinite ways to tell a story, so it baffles me when straightforward/realistic is seen as automatically better than high-flown arty whackadoo, or vice versa. I just think of every story as a whole other world, whether it's set in this world or not, so I'm probably more lenient with them than some people. lol
