I thought cheese was a vegetable and eggs were dairy.

They do tend to put eggs with the dairy in the stores, so I can see where that came from.

... You're on your own with the vegicheese.

Don't feel bad.

I thought chicken and beef were separate branches--that is chicken was chicken (poultry) and beef/pork/lamb/etc were meats. This meant I could eat chicken during Lent (I'm a Catholic). Apparently, that meat/chicken distinction is a cultural thing.

I also thought that veal was horse. I always felt so bad when I ate it at school ("veal patties") because I really loved horses, but they tasted so good!

Oh I don't, this is little kid stuff here (like six years old)

And I do think that's a pretty common cultural thing with poultry not being meat. And from a culinary perspective they are different, aren't they?

You do sometimes see poultry separated from "meat" and "meat" applied only to mammals.

I've met people who are dead certain that vegetarians, as a group, eat seafood... because fish doesn't count as meat, I guess.
