(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)I thought chicken and beef were separate branches--that is chicken was chicken (poultry) and beef/pork/lamb/etc were meats. This meant I could eat chicken during Lent (I'm a Catholic). Apparently, that meat/chicken distinction is a cultural thing.
I also thought that veal was horse. I always felt so bad when I ate it at school ("veal patties") because I really loved horses, but they tasted so good!

And I do think that's a pretty common cultural thing with poultry not being meat. And from a culinary perspective they are different, aren't they?
