It was the last name of one of Trump's ancestors, who Americanized it to Trump, probably for the same reasons most immigrants did then. I have to say, there 's an element of ethnocentrism/xenophobia in mocking "funny sounding" aka non-Anglo names...but given Trump's track record he's not in a good position to call that out.

John Oliver used it as a way to break the sense of awe people immediately have to the name Trump, as a way of, "Calling him this other name suddenly humanizes him, doesn't it?" like the way people react to the name 'Shaq' vs. if he was just Steve or something.

You're half right, just like the anon above you. Jon's main point was a form of criticism. His strategy, however, was to make it an insulting form of comedy.
