Several articles have come out saying that Stephen's losing audience viewership because he's too left-wing, which might be up for debate because it seems to a lot of people that if you're pro-gay and anti-racism then you're automatically a radical liberal.

That doesn't mean he hasn't toned it down, though? Because OP is referring to his current position in relation to The Colbert Report, not in relation to what late night show audiences feel is liberal vs. conservative.
