Because he played a character also named Stephen Colbert, who had very different opinions and experiences. So it's important to be clear when you're talking about Stephen-the-real-person as opposed to Stephen-the-character.

And no, he didn't have a breakdown! I'm saying, I wouldn't have wanted him to risk it -- better for him and Stewart to stop when it was still healthy, before either of them burned out.
