I'm curious about what this sadomasochistic side thing is about.

Etrian Odyssey is a dungeon crawler in the vein of Wizardry, which aside from being a major competitor to early 80s RPG king the Ultima series, was also massively influential in Japan (basically jRPGs owe most of their existence to Wizardry's popularity in the East -- scroll down to the bottom here for a breakdown.) Wizardry is legendary for its difficulty, and Etrian Odyssey, in its devotion to being a love letter to that franchise and the era in general, is also quite difficult.

(As a site note, you can also see the influence of Wizardry in games like From Software's King's Field and later the Dark Souls series. Basically Wizardry was as influential in Japan as Final Fantasy was in the US.)

No problem! I've done a bunch of research on vintage RPGs and the like recently so it's still pretty fresh in my head :)

To follow up a little more, Etrian Odyssey loves to populate dungeons with "F.OE."s, wandering monsters significantly more powerful than everything else on that floor. You're supposed to learn their movement patterns and sneak past them, but you can get some great crafting items if you manage to kill them. Supposedly, the acronym stands for something in Latin, but other interpretations include Freakishly Overpowered Encounter, Ferocious Orange Enemy, and Fucks Over Everything. There's also a catchy song about them: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fUs2_7SYAI8

It's hard. It's extremely hard and unforgiving. I just started the third game and experienced way too many game overs only on the first floor (out of 25). The game throws difficulty spikes at you, like they were candies.
