Favorite Death Scenes

(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Your favorite death scenes in fiction. Any fiction. (And the death scene doesn't need to be for a permanent death, or a real death (eg, dreams/imaginings count), or the death of a major character, or anything. Just a death scene.)

Warn for spoilers, obvs!

Boromir <3 The movie version somewhat more because we get to see the actual fighting instead of only hearing about it.

Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. Fits the narrative of the story, isn't shoe-horned in but works perfectly with the plot, and has the emotional resonance that it's both tragic and yet uplifting at the end.

(If I were going to be unkind, I would compare and contrast with the abysmal handling of the same in Star Trek: Into Darkness.)

Spoilers for Torchwood and Buffy

While I greatly resent the circumstances that lead to it, Ianto's death in Children of Earth gets to me on an emotional level. And of course, Joyce Summers in season 6 of Buffy, although it's more of a 'discovery of death' scene.

Raziel's death in Legacy of Kain: Defiance (and also his sorta death at the beginning of Soul Reaver).

Arthur's death on Merlin.

Aeris's death. :(

And not so much the death scene itself, but Harry's grief and anger at the end of OoTP, first in Dumbledore's office and then the scene with Luna.

The "end" of Cloverfield.

I spent most of the movie being annoyed with the human characters 90% of the time but the ending kind of got to me.

Phil Coulson because it was heartfelt and uexpeceted.

M because there was a gut punch feeling of, "Oh my god, what is Bond going to do? I feel so bad for my babies!"

Leomon's death in Digimon Tamers comes out of nowhere and changes the course of the entire series. It felt like he still had a story to tell, a past unrevealed and a future uncertain, and seeing that ended so abruptly mirrors how Jeri feels to see her friend and protector snuffed out.

Doc Webster from Spider Robinson's Callahan series.

I mean, the Doc was one of the heart-and-soul pillars of the series. The series ends with him dying of brain cancer. And it's sad, because he's an old man, the series lasts about thirty years, in canon time (and got printed for something around the same time) and in some way, you assume your favorite fictional characters will never age and get sick and die. So to see this character who I grew up with, who gave me so much comfort and advice through some very difficult years of my childhood, to see him die... it was a very good death, but also the closing of a chapter of my life.

It is my favorite character death.

Dean's many deaths in "Mystery Spot": the first couple were heartbreaking, and then they became hilarious, and then the last one went back to heartbreaking.
