I'm not even sure I'm understanding it. Is it a play on "fruity"? Do people even still use that term for gay people? Is it some "people are too PC these days" thing where an innocuous word is replaced with something that has nothing to do with it in that context because it's related to something that can be offensive in other very specific contexts?

I mean I have still occasionally heard the term "fruit" for gay ppl but yeah this "joke" is just confused and... not funny?

Interesting. Mostly "fruit" makes me think of the movie Clue.
