Re: controversial opinions thread
(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 12:14 am (UTC)(link)Maybe if people wouldn't use asexuality as an excuse or "self-diagnose" it like they do with mental illnesses, other people would take asexuality seriously. I'm doing absolutely nothing to hurt you, everyone else, please just let me be and you can go along your merry way.

It's not a mental illness, though. People "self-diagnose" being gay or bi all the time and no one has a problem with that. Asexuality is a sexual orientation, not a disorder, and the issue isn't that people "self-diagnose" it, it's that a lot of people are just ignorant and/or assholes to people who aren't like them.

Re: controversial opinions thread
(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 03:52 am (UTC)(link)A lack of sex drive can be caused by a HUGE variety of mental and physical disorders, though. Everything from stress, depression, and ptsd to thyroid and hormone disorders, chromosomal anomalies, tumors, cysts, and all kinds of crazy shit. And it that lack of sexual desire may be the only warning sign that person gets that they have a serious problem that needs to be checked out.
So yeah, if you lack any sort of sex drive you really do need to "check into" it.
Sincerely,
A person who thought they were asexual but really just had massive health problems
Re: controversial opinions thread
(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 07:48 am (UTC)(link)Again, sex drive is not the same thing as sexual attraction, and asexuality is about sexual attraction, not lack of sex drive. Like I said before, I know a lack of sex drive can be a symptom of a medical problem in some cases, but there's also variability in sex drives, and some people's are just naturally lower without having any sort of issue. Also, you can have a sex drive, even a high one, and still be asexual if you're not sexually attracted to anyone.
