Why did it have to be America. A whole world to choose from with interesting locations and they went for the tired over used pandering to America.

Hawaii is not "America"

No one sets anything in Hawaii. It's a very underused and non-American setting.

Oh I haven't been paying much attention so I didn't know the world was going to be based on Hawaii this time. I have a Hawaiian friend who's going to be so excited. :)

How is the 50th state of the United States not American?

MTE, but I think they mean as in it's not the most obvious state to represent the whole country

Yeah, I get what they're trying to say -- Hawaii has a lot of roots in Pacific island culture, on top of being a tropical region some distance from the mainland -- but why say it in the most ludicrously incorrect way possible? That's like trying to argue that old photos are black and white because humans didn't see color until the 1950s.

I take it you missed out on Black and White, Anon?

Re: The Alola Region from Pokemon

because japanese people like hawaii? I assume that's also why the last one was set in france. I really don't think it's about pandering to americans so much as places japanese people think are cool.

Also, Hawaii has a huge Japanese population.

Thanks. Surprised at how many took the bait tbh

How can it be pandering when most Americans don't even know Hawaii is part of America?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
6% (the only stat I could find) is not "most Americans".

I'm not American and I think Hawaii is a cool setting!

Out of 7 Pokemon generations this is only the second to be set in the US. Chill. (And Hawai'i is also a popular tropical destination; I think its iconography as a remote island paradise holds more weight than it being American. Now if this were Unova all over again you might have an argument. But even then when more than half of them are still set in Japan where, you know, Pokemon is made...this seems like a pretty weird complaint)

"Only@? 2 of 7. That is a significant % out of the whole entire world.

Ok and four of them are still based in Japan, so...what are you getting at exactly, again?

Re: The Alola Region from Pokemon

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It originates in Japan, no surprise there. 1 in America. No surprise. 2 in America when there's a whole world to explore? Trope filled pandering. If you're too obtuse to understand that it's not my fault.

Or, and this is just a guess, they went with an area that besides being beautiful and multiethnic, has a history with Japan? I mean, Japanese people make up 16% of the state and used to make up 40%.

Lol, when the first 4 regions are based in Japan, the 5th is based on New York, the 6th is based on France, and the newest is based on Hawaii?

MURICA IS TOTES TAKING OVER, AMIRITE?

Go sit down and chill.

You sound more angry than me, but hey we are not allowed to have different feelings to you. Must have forgotten that rule in this varied world of diverse locations and people.

Uh huh.

How you got angry out of that, I have no idea, cause I was amused at how dumb you were sounding.

But, sure, go ahead.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

"Varied" and "diverse."

When the first 4 regions are all set in "Japan."

Me thinks you need to relearn those definitions.
