Re: What have you done today?

Went to see mom at rehab. She's getting out on Sunday, coming home for a couple days, then going to a sober living place for a month. After visiting mom, I came home and had a panic attack, because during the worst of her last bender, I locked her fence so she couldn't leave.

It was that or let her continually replenish her booze supply and try to drive--I took away her car key, but the last time I did that, she called a locksmith and had a new one made ($600!), and when I didn't lock her up I kept getting calls from people who'd found her unconscious in the street and the park a couple blocks away. She'd mostly refused treatment so I just had to bring her home and she'd start over. After her second ER visit (when she literally couldn't talk to refuse) in two weeks, I started locking the gate when I left.

So she told her counsellor that I'd locked her up, and now I'm expecting social workers like the Spanish Inquisition, because I broke the law. Also frantically cleaning, because I'm a hoarder. Was already chipping away at the mess, pre threatened social worker visit, and I'm really glad the kitchen was mostly clean and just needed mopping, because my room comes next and it's terrifying. Also I really hope she stays sober for those two days; there was a more expensive place that would've taken her immediately, but they required a three month commitment and she didn't want to go for that long. She needs to spend the rest of her life there, tbh, she's got terminal liver cancer and another bender like the last few will kill her.

Oh well, one big black trash bin down, two to go. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow...

That sucks anon. I hope things to well with the social worker. After her month in rehab ends, all I can say is unless you're her legal guardian, you might have to just stop. You can't lock her in the house. Separate your accounts and stop. If that means she spends time in jail or blows all her money or passes out in the street until she gets committed, that's what it means.

Show her love but stop being her safety net. She'll never hit bottom and clean up if you don't.

Thanks for the good wishes. Not sure about the legal guardianship, I have power of attorney, but would have to go to court to enforce it, and am in charge of her advance healthcare directive and stuff, but sobriety or lack thereof and how it applies is tricky. ... One and a half trash bins to go...
