Honestly, I'm genuinely impressed that the show went there and didn't just play it for laughs or quick drama. (Didn't they have a lesbian character who also didn't suck? I haven't made it past season 5 yet, but that makes me want to catch up.)

They did, but she met the same fate as pretty much every other recurring character on the show.

Yeah, I heard about both that and Kevin Tran, and I have yet to actually get to either of them which is a little discouraging. I mean, I get it, dangerous job and people die, but it's getting a bit tired over a decade in.

I actually have the first 7 or 8 seasons on DVD and have been streaming it on Netflix but I keep getting distracted.
