I've got no idea how people who are so sensitive to criticism survive in the real world. Really. If you do a lousy job with a task I've assigned you, I won't get nasty but I will point out what you did wrong and make you correct it. I can't imagine what would happen if someone flounced in the workplace the way people do online.

Um... fic is what a lot of people do to unwind from workplace stress. You get that, right?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt - I see the wisdom of this approach, but it makes me wince that this is always brought up with the implication that because it's for fun, it's okay that people do a half assed job.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
actually, though, why isn't it okay that people do a half assed job

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Because they expect you to do a fully assed job of reading it?

How does one even gauge that?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt, but they can do a half-assed job, but I can also point out that it is obviously a half-assed job.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
Not a thing, so long as you don't expect people to pretend like it's not a half assed job.

Repeat after me, anon: you don't get paid to write fanfic.

/slowly puts down her royalty statement from the fairytale retelling she published last year

Oh... okay.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
That humblebrag.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
this is quite possibly one of the most insufferable comments ever to be posted on FS

Because that is clearly the same thing as putting up fics on Ao3...

This isn't a workplace or a job, it's a hobby. There are different codes of etiquette that pertain to those situations, as in all other situations.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah once I told my grandma her knitting looked like shit, who cares if it was just her hobby and she didn't ask for criticism

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
lol

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Bwahahahahahahahahaha!!!

Some do.. barely. With meds and therapy.

Yes, some writers are just young and foolish, but the Internet is also a place where people with various limitations and disabilities hang out. I know I make literary mountains out of anthills. But I also know not to specifically ask for no negative feedback because then people go out of their way to be nasty.

A legitimate issue? I'll gladly fix. Hounding me about the content because you wanted A/B when it's a clearly-labeled C/D fic or something similar? Definitely not cool.
