East coaster here. I didn't even know Oakland was in CA.

Man no offense, but I'm just saying, I'm not out here thinking Pittsburgh is in Ohio, you know?

There aren't other Pittsburgh around the country to confuse with Pittsburgh, PA.

There are other Oaklands. Oakland, NJ. Oakland, Michgan. If there's a Pittsburgh, Oregon, you might have a point.

Oakland, NJ and Oakland, MI both have under 20,000 people. On the other hand, there is a Pittsburg, California, with 60,000 people (coincidentally very close to Oakland).

So clearly, someone from California would be even MORE justified in being confused.

That's... not how you spell Pittsburgh.

I didn't say that, but if you want to claim it for yourself, be my guest. I'm between both other Oaklands and am familiar with one of them, so CA is not the first to pop into mind. I figured it was some other Oakland somewhere, knowing there are more than one.

You acted like it was crazy for someone to not be aware exactly which Oakland was being referred to, that it was predominantly black and/or poor, and also familiar with the song referencing it as though every person is familiar with 20 year old rap, which is a little ridiculous. I'm not white, either.

Well, no, I thought it was reasonable to expect someone to recognize that talking about "Oakland booty" in a rap song might somehow be associated with blackness.

This subthread is a result of someone saying they didn't even know what state Oakland is in, which is - to me - a larger claim.

I am that person. I didn't know what state Oakland was in. Oakland is not culturally, financially, or physically relevant to me in the least and I'm puzzled at why you would expect everyone in America to know where it is. It's got under half a million people, it's not even big by my standards. It barely makes the top 50 in the US.

Can you name the eighth largest city in New York without wikipedia?

Syracuse, Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, and Utica aren't particularly relevant to me, but I still know something about them, or at least that they exist.

It just seems weird to have no idea about places in America, I guess. That's all.

Heh, you know, in retrospect, most of those have famous universities that most people over college age would have heard of so it's a little less equivalent. Bad analogy on my part.

If me not knowing that is weird to you, then you assuming the city I haven't heard of before is famous enough so that every American should know exactly which Oakland is being talked about and that it is in California or else they're, quote, "ignorant," is just as weird to me.

Pittsburgh is a better-known city on the national level than Oakland. Oakland is the kind of city most people around here would dismiss as a suburb of SF.

Oakland does have like 100,000 more residents. But, sure, Pittsburgh is the largest city in its area, whereas Oakland isn't. What about Newark, then? Or Buffalo?

No one outside of the northeast really cares about Newark or Buffalo, either. It's just not important when you don't live there.

I went to college near Newark. Most people assume Newark is in NY, so no.

I don't know. I'm not from there but I used to live in Boston and knew people from places like Newark or Buffalo so I'm not an untainted example.

I know where Buffalo is, but not Newark.

Lots of people hear about Newark and Camden and crime and assume they're in NYC, lol

I don't think Oakland is that famous outside of California? I've never even heard of it, or never heard it talked of enough to stick in my memory, in any case.

nayrt but Minnesotan here and I've never heard of Oakland. the name means literally nothing to me.

but it not being famous has a direct effect on whether an American (or anyone) would be likely to know what it is, so how is this not relevant?
