Re: Sir Mix-a-Lot disagrees

OK

I don't really agree with him (for one thing, it seems like he's addressing the song in general, not the specific line; for another thing, I mean, no offense to Sir Mix-a-Lot but I think he might not be entirely the most perceptive analyst of contemporary cultural politics). But good for him, I guess.

He is addressing her specific post which has that specific line. And he says that she is specifically talking about her butt. But yeah, I guess he could be addressing the song in general.

...Are you seriously telling a black artist what he's allowed to think in regards to his own song? And then claiming you know more about cultural politics than he does? Because holy shit.

Oh, long before Blake Lively made her comment, there were tumblr posts telling white girls not to use that song to feel good about their butts because the song is only for black girls with big butts, not them.

telling white girls not to use that song to feel good about their butts because the song is only for black girls with big butts, not them.

Just to reiterate, that's, like, emphatically not the argument being made ITT

Yup, and a lot of people on tumblr are fucking stupid.

I don't see how I'm doing either.

I don't really agree with him

It is his song. His art. His work. Whether you agree with him or not does not fucking matter, because your opinion means equal parts jack and shit. He is fine with his song being sampled, and his opinion is the only one that should count (because again, it's his work).

I mean, no offense to Sir Mix-a-Lot but I think he might not be entirely the most perceptive analyst of contemporary cultural politics

He has lived contemporary cultural politics on account of being famous and black, you insufferable fucking moron.

he's so old you literally thought he was dead

That doesn't mean he has no idea what's going on in the world. Quite the contrary. He knows more than I do.

A song is different than the act of quoting a song. I don't in any way question anything Sir Mix-A-Lot said about the meaning of the song.

What the fuck word salad is this?

Re: Sir Mix-a-Lot disagrees

Sir Mix-a-Lot is an authority on the meaning of his song, but he is not an authority on what someone is meaning or doing when they quote his song.

He is an authority on who is allowed to do what with his song. In every sense. If you have a problem with a black artist having the authority to say he's fine with how a white person is using his material, you are the one being racist, full fucking stop.
