Re: I know I sure miss the days when all music was so much better

I get a kick out of the string of utterly depressing teen death songs that seemed to spring up in the late '50s and early '60s. That was an odd little trend.

Oh man, Last Kiss, remember that one? That was a downer!

AYRT

Ah, well, I was born in '84, so I wasn't around when that song initially came out, but I've certainly heard it when listening to oldies radio stations. It is a pretty dark song. I remember Pearl Jam got some radio airplay with their cover of it in the late '90s.

(Actually, come to think of it, I'm kind of surprised that when the emo genre had its heyday, that some of those bands didn't cover some of those songs :p. That sort of thing seems like it could've been right up their alley.)

Enh, I guess because that time period is supposed to be all innocent and pastel-hued or something? (Even though it totally wasn't.)

Man, screamo Last Kiss, that would've been something for sure.

Ergh, yes, the way people like to try and claim that time period was so much "better" and "more innocent" is just...yeah. No. Just...no.

LOL, I would totally listen to that out of sheer curiosity if nothing else :p.

No kidding. I would NEVER want to live in the 50s, myself. Segregation alone...

Teen Angel, Tell Laura I Love Her...

Did that have anything to do with the Vietnam War? Because a lot of young people were dying then.

Not in these songs. They were usually car wrecks caused by intensely stupid behavior on the part of one or more members of a romantic couple. One of the songs cited above involves a couple getting caught on train tracks and she goes back to get his high school ring. You know, never mind that they were already safe and by that point they could both probably see and hear the train coming.

Yeah, man, those pop stars back then just LOVED their car accidents... they put country to shame for a while there.

It's not a car accident song, but there's also Pat Boone's "Moody River", with a girl drowning herself in a river because she cheated on her boyfriend and felt immense guilt over it. Good times!

(I always wonder how many couples slow danced to some of those kinds of songs at school dances, without paying a bit of attention to the lyrics, the same way "Every Breath You Take" gets played at weddings :p.)

Enh, I was never good at picking up on the lyrics to songs, so there are quite a few that once I learned what they were ACTUALLY saying, I went D:

(Like 'Girls All The Bad Guys Want.' Man, I liked that song so much better when I thought the line was, "screaming over tough guys," not "creaming over tough guys.")

LOL, yeah, I think when we're kids a lot of that stuff goes over our heads in general :p. I used to happily sing along to J. Geils Band's "Centerfold" when I was little (I liked the "na, na, na" bit!), not having a clue what it meant.

And when I was in Girl Scouts, we were taking a trip somewhere once, and the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb" came on the radio, and we were singing along to it. Yeeeeeeeeeeah, talk about an ironic choice of song for a group of girls to sing :p.

Yeah, when I was little I sang along to Monty Python's 'Sit On My Face.'

This was a poor life choice.

I remember at camp when I was seven or eight, we had to do a retro dance to "Leader of the Pack". It only hit me (lol) years later what a fucked up song that was, especially for a kid whose dad died in a traffic accident.

I know, right? We loved that song too as a kid, but man is it dark. At least that one has the charm of the greaser motorcycle bad boy actually being really nice before he, you know, bites it.
