There was some serious shit music in the 80s. (Lookin' at you, Safety Dance!)

MTV was a thing and women needed to be sexy (but the men still looked like complete shit). Janet Jackson got flack in '86 for being "fat". Same was said of the black-haired woman from Heart. When Wilson Phillips' videos were shot, they intentionally tried to hide full-body shots of the heavy sister. Grace Jones was considered "an ugly dyke" and Grace Slick looked "too old" to be on television (because Madonna was in her early 20s and she was the video standard). If you look at the women who's music made it out of the 80s, they are conventionally attractive, and even the one-hit-wonders were still pretty cute.
