The ENTIRE brain or no brain at all! What is a spinal tap? What is a biopsy?

These things do not exist in funguszombieland!!

Once Ellie shoots Joel in the back of the head she then turns and walks back to the hospital to propose a radical new procedure which revolutionizes medicine forever, with the startling realization that you only need to take a tiny, tiny sample of cerebrospinal fluid to check for foreign bodies.
