home bleaching hair

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
hi guys. i want to bleach my hair so that i can dye in a peachy colour. but i've never bleached my hair before - let alone by myself - and am hoping i can get some advice from those of you who have.

i have naturally red hair. i've heard opposite things: red hair is hard to bleach, and red hair is easier to bleach (since dark hair turns orangey with the first bleach it's like skipping that step so you ultimately apply less). i've dyed my hair twice before (years apart and years since) and the dye took well, so i'm hoping it'll be the same with bleach.

but i'm nervous about messing it up. is this something i should just shell out $ to see a stylist for? or is it simple enough to try at home? thanks in advance.

I would go to a stylist or find a friend who has experience bleaching hair myself. Bleach can damage your hair more then dye after all.

Both are true: red hair is harder to bleach than blonde hair. Red hair is easier to bleach than brown hair.

If you're bleaching, go see a stylist (a good one, whose work you've seen on others, preferably).

Home bleaching can be messy, lead to mistakes, and at worst, you can cause chemical burns to yourself (and no one wants chemical burns). You may even have to go see a stylist after the fact if you really botch it up/ don't like it all.

Drop some $ now, save $ and tears later. Good luck!

(TMI/gross warning)

In all honesty, I'd also recommend getting it done. Maybe I just had shit luck, but after I bleached my hair, my scalp was red/sore, and I had skin chunks coming off. Like, flakes of skin, and blood.

Again, maybe I was just unlucky, but if you're not careful, it can burn. :(

Get it done professionally the first time so that you can find out how long you need to leave it in to strip out the color. After that, you can probably do it on your own, but leave it to the pros for your first attempt.

I went that route. I watched, I learned, I did it myself after I was more confident I knew what was what.

Unless you are really, really used to dyeing hair you will want to go to a stylist for it for at least the first time. Since the roots take less time to bleach out than the tips, you need to apply it in a way that's hard to do on your own.

It's also super hard to do by yourself since you need to section off hair and apply the lightener... it's just way easier to let someone else do it. Probably the only thing I'd still go to a salon for if I were going to get a color job.
