That would be likely for every animal.

Not so! Crows, great apes, dolphins, and octopuses have all demonstrated knowledge of abstract reasoning. Crows, for example, are the only avians (and only corvids, obvs) known to understand the concepts of death and altruism.

Don't have the links on me, but there are some pretty famous stories about the exploits of Koko the gorilla that come to mind as well.

That presence does not mean that they can communicate with humans. Koko's sign language skills have been greatly debated. Interpreter bias is a big issue.

Also, is a magical situation in which I can talk to a dog.

Sure, there are arguments to be made, but I feel obligated to point out that we aren't just drawing from one data point re: sign language in great apes. A bunch of the studies that I've read which attempt to refute the evidence themselves use evidence which one is able to interpret as supportive.

Even in this magical situation one must consider the limitations of reality, even so. It is going to be a lot easier for us to communicate with an animal which does show evidence of understanding abstraction than one that doesn't. So says the theory that the language processing centers of our brains actively shape our perception of reality, at any rate.

Just by going off the wiki page (because I am lazy), it really seems that results are pretty meh at best. Answering questions could (like they say) just be a trick they learned. Like a dog that has learned to "count".

In a magical situation I really don't have to consider the limitations of reality. Just like I don't question where the magic in Harry Potter comes from and how Star Wars fans who hate the prequels like to imagine they don't know where the Force comes from.

Well, no. Chimpanzees (and other great apes) are probably one of the closest to us, and some have already been taught to communicate via sign language. They've demonstrated that they do understand abstract concepts quite well: death, humor, loss, deception, etc.

Members of the corvid family (ravens, crows) have demonstrated problem solving skills and well as tool usage. They have an excellent memory, too, and can differentiate between one human and other, including remember who is nice and who isn't.

Yep, it's hypothetical situation that begins with the assumption you CAN talk with any animal you choose, so your scenario that every animal would be unlikely to understand humans makes no sense at all. Even aside from the fact that there are already, IRL, animals which communicate with human beings and can grasp abstract concepts.

This discussion has been odd. It's as if someone asked "If you had the ability to fly like Superman, where would you go?" and someone came in going, "But no human being can fly on their own, without the aid of some other device, etc. etc." I mean, that's correct, but it's also being a pedant and a killjoy.

My fucking phone did that. It kept jumping around and throwing words around. Let me rewrite it using a real keyboard. :P

And yeah, I agree with the rest. This is just some fun hypothetical question. No idea why my comment was the one chosen to have this argument over a silly question.

nayrt but pretty sure it's because you made a blanket statement about how no animals can understand abstract concepts and are ignoring all evidence to the contrary, when the only support you can drum up is your line about interpreter bias. Not all indications of animal intelligence/communication involves sign language, but hey, it's clearly all you've got.

I actually never said that. Nor was it in my initial comment that started the whole conversation. =)
