where was the rage about the school shooter song a while back

like pretty much all pop songs promote reckless behavior, chronic alcoholism, and unsafe free lovin' so dunno why a couple of skeevy lines here got a bunch of people up in arms

songs essentially fiction anyway

basically in the wise words of that one dude:

it's not sexist because i'm saying it in a song
that's right, bitch, now take off your thong

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
The concept of fiction appears to be beyond some people's comprehension.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Um, as someone upthread said, the lyrics directly parallel real things rapists have said to their victims: https://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2013/09/17/from-the-mouths-of-rapists-the-lyrics-of-robin-thickes-blurred-lines-and-real-life-rape/

just like fiction parallels things that happen in real life

but somehow, someway no one is physically being raped by this song

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Nowhere has anyone made that argument. But the fact it parallels things said by actual rapists to their victims should at least make it obvious why so many people were upset by it.

i was told good morning by my rapist

this is a IRL thing my rapist told me

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
And if you hate people saying good morning to you, that would be perfectly understandable to me.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Some rapists tell their victims they're pretty.

Guess that's off limits now, too!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
It's not unreasonable to get upset when you hear the same words somebody said while violating you.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's not unreasonable that you are upset. It's unreasonable to expect everyone else to feel righteous indignation over it, as is the case with this song.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't expect that, actually? But I do expect other people to at least understand why a lot of others found it upsetting, and not dismiss their concerns as nonsense. That's all.

where was the rage about the school shooter song a while back

I don't remember any rage, because I feel like when it came out there hadn't been any major shootings in awhile and I guess most people just didn't take it seriously? But when I happen to catch it on the radio nowadays (which isn't often because it's old and not played often, plus I don't listen to the radio much anyway) I always change the channel because shootings are something that happen so damn frequently now that hearing about one is this upbeat song just makes me uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think it's amazing that people seem to have lost all ability to not take song lyrics literally. (Come to think of it: Where are the people complaining about "I don't like Mondays", while we're onthe topic of songs about school shootings?)

These people probably also believe that most metal bands want to go on murderous rampages all the time (or ride some dragons. Or both.).
