Our elderly small dog (10 yrs) has been sick for about a month now with vomiting. Over the course of the month, she's been to the vet four times, each time being given medication or IV fluid to help with the dehydration. Vet suspects that, since the basic evaluation of "bacterial or viral infection" has proven false, it might be because of a stomach ulcer or possibly stomach cancer. Poor thing is on a bland diet, and while that had been working for about half a week, this morning she threw up her rice (it was undigested). She's been eating cooked lean hamburger (no grease) since then, but just about an hour ago she had a black, tarry stool. Google says that it's possible she has a bleeding ulcer, and it's something she should go to the vet for, but at this time of night, every vet has already closed up shop.

We'd take her to the vet tomorrow, but the problem is, a human family member has a medical appointment out of town and there won't be anyone to stay home with the dog. I would, but I'm the only one who knows how to work our GPS and the medical center is in a part of the city no one is familiar with.

What I want to know is; what should we do this weekend for her? There aren't any vets nearby that would take her in while we're gone. Has anyone here dealt with a similar experience with their dog?

Most vets have emergency numbers.

Google search for emergency animal hospital. Maybe there's a place in the city you can take her tomorrow in combination with the human medical appointment. Or, look up directions to the human hospital and write them down so you don't need the gps.

Look up emergency vet clinics, and/or call local vet's offices and see if they give an after-hours emergency number as a part of their voicemail recording. If so, take dog to emergency clinic and/or call emergency vet number.

If there's absolutely nowhere within range that you can take the dog tonight, google the route from your home to the medical center, and print out the directions and map. Send the rest of your family to the medical center with said directions and map, and take your dog to the vet. If your family leaves early, they'll have time to stop and ask for directions if they get lost.

Or teach someone else how to work the GPS. They're not that hard to handle, particularly if you input the address of the medical center ahead of time, so all anyone has to do is turn it on and tell it to start giving directions.
