This isn't a response to any particular secret, I just need to get it off my chest: I'm sicking of hearing about Torchwood. There's always a handful of secrets about it in every post, and I just don't get the massive outpouring of fandom interest in this show, because it's dreadful.

If indignant Torchwood fans would like to tell me why the show warrants all this love, I'd be really happy to know. Because I just don't get it at the moment.

The show has fanservice, delicious bisexuality, and John Barrowman.

I think that's why. :')

[identity profile] queenpeladon.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally get that, but I also get the opinion from a lot of these secrets that that people are loving it for other reasons - ie. the storylines, the characters, the scripts, etc. Which just baffles me. And ultimately, even the promise of lots of boy-kissing couldn't overpower those bad bits, for me.

(Anonymous) 2008-03-22 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
just because it's your opinion that it's dreadful doesn't mean it's our opinion.

and actually, yesterday there wasn't a single Torchwood secret. from what I remember.

[identity profile] queenpeladon.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Ordinarily I'd agree, but I think the whole Torchwood-being-bad thing has become a fact, like the existence of the dinosaurs. But like I said, if you want to try to tell me why it's a quality piece of broadcasting, I'm all eyes. :)

(Anonymous) 2008-03-22 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
i admit it's not the best show ever. but again, it's all a matter of opinion. a general example, some people might like/love a movie, some people might hate that same movie. and all for the same reasons. also, since when do people only have to watch quality broadcasting? sometimes people just want to relax, watch something that they don't have to think about.

i guess it's just going to be an agree to disagree thing.

also, you complaining about the amount of torchwood secrets isn't going to change anything. it's a popular series.

[identity profile] queenpeladon.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
a general example, some people might like/love a movie, some people might hate that same movie. and all for the same reasons.

Are there really people who love tired storylines, woolly plots, hammy acting, weak characters and embarrassing dialogue though? Because those are my criticisms of Torchwood. I'm not talking about the specific storylines or the characters, I'm talking about the quality of the whole thing, which is pretty low in my opinion.

also, since when do people only have to watch quality broadcasting? sometimes people just want to relax, watch something that they don't have to think about.

You're right, but my point was that a lot of these secrets (and a lot of what I've read in my friends' journals) seems to suggest that they do actually consider Torchwood good telly, as opposed to them watching it for camp value, or for the slash, or just to laugh at it. And frankly, when I want to kick back and relax, the last thing I want to do is subject myself to bad TV, the kind that will just make me angry that so little thought went into it, and insults my intelligence.

also, you complaining about the amount of torchwood secrets isn't going to change anything. it's a popular series.

I wasn't under the illusion that I was going to change anything, I just wanted to express my opinion on the subject, and maybe get the opinion of some Torchwood fans. I haven't heard anything yet to pursuade me that my judgment is wrong or undeserved.

Yes, if anything, because they're either masochists or people that enjoy laughing at those. Just look at all the secrets saying that reading badfic is their dirty pleasure.

tired storylines, woolly plots, hammy acting, weak characters

I can agree with the first out of that list, but not the rest. My critical functions watching the show are somewhat tempered by the knowledge that this is Who-verse and Doctor Who and associates, to me, has always had an element of hammy cheesy pantomime to it, so I don't necessarily see those things you mention as particularly bad/off-putting. It's endearing, and easily consumable rather than ridiculously self-important, so I think people give it a pass on its weaker structural elements due to the sheer momentum of its charm. Plus, most of the secrets I've seen are directed specifically toward the characters (whether it be squee-related, identification or puzzlement/ambivalence/hate over their popularity) and I'd say that for all the crazy hijinks those characters are put through, the actors do a good job giving into the campiness of the plot while making them really relatable and sympathetic. People can excuse lots for a character they truly feel something for and more often than not, that kind of reaction will overpower analysis of a more cerebral kind.

I watch Torchwood and Smallville every week. While I can't speak for every fan of these shows, I'm completely aware of how godawful they are, but it's such (unintentionally) hilarious, cracky fun.

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-03-23 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Torchwood makes me want to throw things at my TV 90% less, too!

[identity profile] hollycore.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why there's so much manga/anime secrets. It just doesn't seem worth getting excited about. It's the same deal... just different people with different tastes really.

[identity profile] queenpeladon.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty clueless when it comes to anime too, so I can't pass judgment on any of it, whereas I've seen enough Torchwood to feel pretty justified in laying into it. :)

Haha, I actually don't watch the show. I just needed to let it out.

[identity profile] tiffiny.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The show has fanservice, delicious bisexuality, and John Barrowman.

I started watching for these reasons, but now I'm really attached to a couple of the characters. Maybe I just have really bad taste.

[identity profile] graziaplena.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, besides the boykissing and the humor, occasionally the show succeeds at evoking real emotion, and the dynamics between each of the team members are interesting to watch and to contemplate. That's why I think it warrants love.

And the boykissing. And the Barrowman.

Sorry you don't like it. God bless the scroll function.

[identity profile] queenpeladon.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I can accept that. :)

And believe me, I'm well acquainted with that scroll function!

[identity profile] graziaplena.livejournal.com 2008-03-23 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, me too! :) Were I the boss, there would be no roleplay secrets.

Also, a techie who's-- gasp!-- female! In fact, the female characters are as well-drawn (IMO) as the male characters, which is something of a pleasant change.

I watch it because it's a breezy, campy forty-five minutes of pretty people saving the world. I watch corny action movies too, and love them. Some people may eat steak and drink fine wine every night, but I like some beer and cheezy poofs sometimes.

[identity profile] texmas.livejournal.com 2008-03-23 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way about Phoenix Wright.

And DEATH NOTE.

And Anime.

[identity profile] un-sedentary.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the show for the Captain Jack.

My non-fandom-secret is that I get annoyed when people say they only got into it for the slash because most of them are the ones who started all the ship wars and ruined the fandom.
