(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)And yeah, I totally get it. The whole reason stories like that are sad is BECAUSE the character deserves it. The tragedy of their life being spent on doing terrible things and losing it all and leaving them with nothing, not the tragedy of "this poor guy had something bad happen to them" which is a totally different sort of tragedy.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-24 06:16 am (UTC)(link)There's the play by Molière called The School for Wives. Short version, it's about this total jackass who is so convinced that all women are faithless that he straight-up buys a child, has her raised by nuns, and then when she's old enough (old enough by 17th century standards, that is) he locks her up in his country estate so that she can only meet the people he wants her to meet, and only learn the things he wants her to learn.
As you can probably guess, things end badly for him: he's publicly humiliated, all his friends realise he's a cockwaffle, and the girl marries a guy her own age who she actually likes.
And... near the end, when he's really cracking up, he actually gets down on his knees and begs the girl to marry him. He pleads for her to return his affections, in any measure.
I really liked that scene.

Also damn I still wish I'd been able to see that production.
