Late to the party, but oooh yeah -
There's the play by Molière called The School for Wives. Short version, it's about this total jackass who is so convinced that all women are faithless that he straight-up buys a child, has her raised by nuns, and then when she's old enough (old enough by 17th century standards, that is) he locks her up in his country estate so that she can only meet the people he wants her to meet, and only learn the things he wants her to learn.
As you can probably guess, things end badly for him: he's publicly humiliated, all his friends realise he's a cockwaffle, and the girl marries a guy her own age who she actually likes.
And... near the end, when he's really cracking up, he actually gets down on his knees and begs the girl to marry him. He pleads for her to return his affections, in any measure.
I really liked that scene.
