Re: Minecraft creator is a piece of human filth

It's original meaning was pretty iffy, tho.

Hey, we need a word for a patronising and condescending explanation

Well men are as a group patronising and condescending, why not put "Man" in front of it "explaining"

Love it but let's lose a syllable

Mansplaining!

I think the original meaning had an extra layer of explaining things to women in a patronising way because the man assumed that, because they were a woman, they automatically knew less than them about the subject.

It certainly happened to me a lot when I worked in IT.

yeah, but its no more a /man/ behaviour than anything else.

Women are certainly often condescending but they distinctly assumed I was bad at my job because I was a woman. "Can I speak to a man? I need to get my computer fixed." is literally something that was said to me. Often. And I was extremely good at my job. I had the highest fix rate in the entire company. Women can be sexist but I never experienced them being sexist in that particular way.

How would a man assuming I know nothing about computers because I'm a woman and explaining to me how they work not mansplaining by its original definition?

It's not an inherent man behavior but I definitely think it's a cultural one.

As someone who has had to deal with men explaining simple things to me

[personal profile] chardmonster 2016-05-24 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Such as

1. Explaining the fact that there are, for example, multiple colors of Incredible Hulk like ten times, over and over, because I am apparently incapable of retaining this information

2. Explaining my own dissertation topic to me, after years of my having worked on it

This really is a phenomenon that's attributable to guys and targeted at women. It just is. There's a whole subset of dudes who don't think women are capable of any kind of competency let alone expertise in their pet subject, even if they are actual experts in their own right.

I've gotten the exact same treatment more often by female professors who were convinced they were the only person knowledgeable about a certain subject, and they did it to female and male students alike. It's almost as if neither your nor my anecdotal evidence is not any real "proof" after all.
