Yeah,, it's a nice throwback to yesterday's conversation about human villains being the best villains.

Yeah, the more I think about Disney movies the more I realize they're a bit more complex under the surface. Lots of parallels and foils.

I never got into the comics. I've always been really frustrated that we didn't get to see these stories and instead got brand new characters. I never really warmed to Korra, but I liked it better the second time around.

Yeah. You know, it's funny, I recently finished a book boyfriend got from the library about Nazi hunters. The book also went into the psychology of the Nazis around them, and how there were similar trends with them--a complete lack of taking responsibility, plus mawkish self-pity. (For instance, apparently some of the higher-ups were shocked, SHOCKED that they would be HANGED for their crimes, and protested vociferously that they deserved a proper soldier's death--shooting. But HANGING? How... HOW INHUMANE! The irony seemed completely beyond them.)

I find myself really interested lately in what exactly evil entails in the real world, and how people do it, get away with it, and justify it. It's interesting, if not exactly a barrel of laughs.

Another foil: GASTON! Gaston is also pretty great. Haven't we all met a Gaston?

There was a lot messed up in the Nazi Regime. They do studies all the time though where people will do awful things if the higher ups tell them it's ok. Did you ever see that study where people thought they were giving people electric shocks but the leader of the study told them 'it's ok, it's all part of the study' so they kept going while the other person cried out?

Yeah, I go through surges of reading about this stuff, and I always end up needing a break after a while.

There's always a Gaston. He's an exaggerated caricature, but only slightly.

Thing was, even the men IN CHARGE claimed that they weren't responsible. There was always someone higher up the chain they would blame. And I think there's a difference between honestly obeying and feeling shitty about it and using it as an excuse.

Yep. "I was just following orders." And you're right, there's a major difference.

If you're looking for more reading material on the same subject, I recommend Evil Men by James Dawes. It looks into the war crimes committed during the second Sino-Japanese war, and how perfectly ordinary people became capable of such horrific acts. It can be gruelling at times but it's a very good read that makes an effort not to make the war crimes seem like something titillating.

Ooh, thanks anon! I'll check it out; it sounds a bit grim for me right now, but I do want to check it out at some point!
