Dream Question

(Anonymous) 2016-05-24 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been having these dreams the last few nights. I'm not sure what to call them. I wouldn't call them nightmares because they aren't eliciting fear. But they are eliciting other negative emotions- mostly stress, sadness, and mental pain. They've mostly revolved around people in my life finding out something about me and not liking me anymore.

Has anyone else had bad dreams like this before that weren't nightmares? Is this a normal thing? I'm not particularly stressed as far as I know. It may be medication related, I'm not sure.

Prefacing this with I Am Not Any Kind Of Doctor, but that seems pretty normal to me. Especially if you're fixating on the fact that you have these dreams before you go to bed. I frequently have dreams that I wouldn't classify as nightmares, but are nonetheless unpleasant. However, if you feel like there may be an issue with your medication, or if these dreams are impairing your daily life, you should definitely talk to your doctor anyway.

I call those dreams nightmares. A nightmare, to me, is a dream that elicits significant unpleasant feeling, including but not limited to fear. (I actually prefer fear ones now, because I stop being afraid when I wake up, whereas with those other emotions, they stick around for a while and mess up my day.)

It is a normal thing. You are probably stressed about something and this is reflecting itself in your dreams.

Sometimes if I'm under stress or having anxiety about some other issue in my life, it'll manifest in dreams. I wouldn't call them nightmares either, but they're kind of like you said... stressful dreams where I'm lost and don't know how to get home, things like that. I figure it's your brain's way of trying to cope with the stress.

Can I ask what the meds are? When I started on Cymbalta I had insanely detailed, vivid, mostly negative dreams.

Two things. Started taking anti-depressants that I was off for a year. Stopped taking painkillers I've been taking for a couple weeks (and was taking a different one on and off for the past few months as well).

Ugh I am so glad that stuff didn't exacerbate my already vivid TECHNICOLOUR WITH SURROUND SOUND dreams/nightmares I already have. Though it did make me so nauseated I stopped eating until the doctor weaned me off it. :/

Those might still be nightmares. idk I haven't really had many. I've had a few bad dreams of people I care about dying or (much less bad) people I have cared about romantically rejecting me/going out with someone else. Most of my other dreams are weird/neutral.

I don't think it's abnormal necessarily though, lots of people have all kinds of dreams and some people regularly have bad ones. :/
