Question thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-24 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I have a question.

Dream Question

(Anonymous) 2016-05-24 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been having these dreams the last few nights. I'm not sure what to call them. I wouldn't call them nightmares because they aren't eliciting fear. But they are eliciting other negative emotions- mostly stress, sadness, and mental pain. They've mostly revolved around people in my life finding out something about me and not liking me anymore.

Has anyone else had bad dreams like this before that weren't nightmares? Is this a normal thing? I'm not particularly stressed as far as I know. It may be medication related, I'm not sure.

Prefacing this with I Am Not Any Kind Of Doctor, but that seems pretty normal to me. Especially if you're fixating on the fact that you have these dreams before you go to bed. I frequently have dreams that I wouldn't classify as nightmares, but are nonetheless unpleasant. However, if you feel like there may be an issue with your medication, or if these dreams are impairing your daily life, you should definitely talk to your doctor anyway.

I call those dreams nightmares. A nightmare, to me, is a dream that elicits significant unpleasant feeling, including but not limited to fear. (I actually prefer fear ones now, because I stop being afraid when I wake up, whereas with those other emotions, they stick around for a while and mess up my day.)

It is a normal thing. You are probably stressed about something and this is reflecting itself in your dreams.

Sometimes if I'm under stress or having anxiety about some other issue in my life, it'll manifest in dreams. I wouldn't call them nightmares either, but they're kind of like you said... stressful dreams where I'm lost and don't know how to get home, things like that. I figure it's your brain's way of trying to cope with the stress.

Can I ask what the meds are? When I started on Cymbalta I had insanely detailed, vivid, mostly negative dreams.

Two things. Started taking anti-depressants that I was off for a year. Stopped taking painkillers I've been taking for a couple weeks (and was taking a different one on and off for the past few months as well).

Ugh I am so glad that stuff didn't exacerbate my already vivid TECHNICOLOUR WITH SURROUND SOUND dreams/nightmares I already have. Though it did make me so nauseated I stopped eating until the doctor weaned me off it. :/

Those might still be nightmares. idk I haven't really had many. I've had a few bad dreams of people I care about dying or (much less bad) people I have cared about romantically rejecting me/going out with someone else. Most of my other dreams are weird/neutral.

I don't think it's abnormal necessarily though, lots of people have all kinds of dreams and some people regularly have bad ones. :/

I have a question. So, for money reasons I took myself off my anti-depressant for about a year. Stupid, I know.

I started taking it about a month ago again. I worked myself up like I did the first time: a quarter dose for a week, the a half dose, then a full dose.

My parents freaked out about it, understandably, when they found out (accidentally, didn't mean for them to). But they said that I shouldn't have started taking it without talking to a psychiatrist. Not sure what to do now. Do I keep taking it. I've only been up at the full dose for 3 days. We're going to make an appointment with a psychiatrist. Should I keep taking until then or stop taking until I see one?

I hate to be that guy, but your parents are probably right. Most offices are available for questions, can you call your psychiatrist and ask if they'd like you to take your medication until you have your appointment? All I know is that I've had to quit medicines cold turkey before, and its not pleasant and can trigger some nasty moodswings.

I don't actually have one right now. Moved and switched insurances. I've gotten a list of in-network ones, so we're going to call.

I know they were probably right, just not sure what to do now.

Keep taking it, but definitely talk to your psychiatrist. Stopping cold turkey will probaby screw you over more, but keep on the look out for suicide warning signs.

Considering i don't know which antidepressant it is, ill just give you advice based on the most common ones. Going on and off antidepressants are likely to give you mood swings and not make you feel good. If you were prescibed it before, as long as you've have no major health changes, it is safe for you to start retaking it and i would recommend you do. especially if it worked for you the first time. Id make an appt as soon as you can just to make sure you can get more refills because you dont want to stop again if you can help it. Remember please that most antidepressants take 4-6 weeks for the full effect, so the more you start and stop, you aren't getting much effect. If you have any funny side effects or are worried about something, try your doctors office, OR go and ask a pharmacist. This is just my professional opinion, you gotta do what you think is right for your health.

source- I'm a doctor.

Do not stop taking it now that you have started it. Do mention the situation to your psychiatrist, and assess from there.

Your parents are correct: you really shouldn't have taken yourself off your medication without first speaking to a health care provider and looking at alternate options. However, they also aren't in a position to tell you that you don't still require it now, and while you haven't been on it for very long it's not a great idea to just start and stop medications designed to alter brain chemistry. Usually you don't start feeling the full effects of antidepressants for a number of weeks after you begin taking them, but that doesn't mean they haven't already begun to affect the serotonin levels in your brain.

tl;dr continue taking your full dose until you can see a psychiatrist and discuss whether or not you should still be taking them.

I have my own dream question

(Anonymous) 2016-05-24 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what you'd call them, but sometimes I half-wake up, but I'm still dreaming. Usually when I wake up suddenly or am not feeling well. So I'll get out of bed and walk around, but I'm still dreaming?

One time, for instance, I thought I was in the TARDIS. (In my defense, I'd fallen asleep watching Doctor Who.)

Could it be a weirdly benign sleep paralysis?

menstrual cup question (again)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-25 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the anon from yesterday again trying a diva cup for the first time

Every time I put in or take out my diva cup I hurt my wrist, it pops and hurts a lot. I am doing everything the way everyone says to, but it is hurting a lot. I have short arms and very short fingers, so idk if its that or if I am doing something wrong? I am using a friend's spare cup, and she had the stem cut off, so would having one help? the divacup is a longer cup, and a lot of ppl say its a softer one, but i've still been hurting my wrists. idk, its just bumming me out a lot right now cause I really wanted this to work cause all my friends rave about it all the time

Re: menstrual cup question (again)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-25 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch. :( You shouldn't be doing damage to your wrist to remove your cup. Can you normally reach up in there, before trying the cup? Did you use tampons and have any such issue in the past?

A longer stem might help, if you're very new to it. Some people find they prefer it without, but others say it's the only way they can reach it. Everyone's shaped different up in there!

Re: menstrual cup question (again)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-25 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
re reaching up for other reasons: well I have never been able to comfortably finger myself and I didn't have the issue with tampons cause I always used ones with applicators. I'm hoping a stem might help?

Re: menstrual cup question (again)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-25 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Does it hurt because you're having to strain your fingers to reach up there? Or maybe because you're clenching your fingers to try and grasp the cup? Then maybe the stem would help because you wouldn't have to reach up so far. Or you could maybe try bearing down when you remove the cup, so that it moves closer to your vaginal entrance?
