Re: Question thread

I have a question. So, for money reasons I took myself off my anti-depressant for about a year. Stupid, I know.

I started taking it about a month ago again. I worked myself up like I did the first time: a quarter dose for a week, the a half dose, then a full dose.

My parents freaked out about it, understandably, when they found out (accidentally, didn't mean for them to). But they said that I shouldn't have started taking it without talking to a psychiatrist. Not sure what to do now. Do I keep taking it. I've only been up at the full dose for 3 days. We're going to make an appointment with a psychiatrist. Should I keep taking until then or stop taking until I see one?

I hate to be that guy, but your parents are probably right. Most offices are available for questions, can you call your psychiatrist and ask if they'd like you to take your medication until you have your appointment? All I know is that I've had to quit medicines cold turkey before, and its not pleasant and can trigger some nasty moodswings.

I don't actually have one right now. Moved and switched insurances. I've gotten a list of in-network ones, so we're going to call.

I know they were probably right, just not sure what to do now.

If you can catch someone while they're in office, they may be able to offer you some better advice. If you do come off of it, I'd personally do it gradually (Obligatory not a doctor disclaimer) just because I know from experience how awful it is to just drop a pill.

Keep taking it, but definitely talk to your psychiatrist. Stopping cold turkey will probaby screw you over more, but keep on the look out for suicide warning signs.

Considering i don't know which antidepressant it is, ill just give you advice based on the most common ones. Going on and off antidepressants are likely to give you mood swings and not make you feel good. If you were prescibed it before, as long as you've have no major health changes, it is safe for you to start retaking it and i would recommend you do. especially if it worked for you the first time. Id make an appt as soon as you can just to make sure you can get more refills because you dont want to stop again if you can help it. Remember please that most antidepressants take 4-6 weeks for the full effect, so the more you start and stop, you aren't getting much effect. If you have any funny side effects or are worried about something, try your doctors office, OR go and ask a pharmacist. This is just my professional opinion, you gotta do what you think is right for your health.

source- I'm a doctor.

Do not stop taking it now that you have started it. Do mention the situation to your psychiatrist, and assess from there.

Your parents are correct: you really shouldn't have taken yourself off your medication without first speaking to a health care provider and looking at alternate options. However, they also aren't in a position to tell you that you don't still require it now, and while you haven't been on it for very long it's not a great idea to just start and stop medications designed to alter brain chemistry. Usually you don't start feeling the full effects of antidepressants for a number of weeks after you begin taking them, but that doesn't mean they haven't already begun to affect the serotonin levels in your brain.

tl;dr continue taking your full dose until you can see a psychiatrist and discuss whether or not you should still be taking them.
