I get a lot of my fanfic recs from TVTropes, which is generally a mixed bag but skews just a bit more towards 'good.' One of the big Harry Potter ones that keeps coming up is the 'Dangerverse', which is lengthy and popular enough to have its own page. It was advertised to me as 'how to write OCs/Marauders raised Harry fic and have it be good.'

I don't get it. I mean, it has some pretty good moments, but it's basically cliche after cliche. The children are adorable and precocious, every single one of them, there are New Powers As The Plot Demands, Pop culture references abound with no real reason, character relationships are always tied up neatly, the characters have almost zero flaws (and the flaws they do have are minor at best and easily 'fixed') and it's just nonstop Mary Sue parade, even with the canon characters. I'm on book 5 now because there are still a lot of bits I like, but I have no idea why everyone thinks this is the be-all end-all of fic.

Your problem is that you're getting your fanfic recs from TVTropes. Anyone can get a fic rec on TVTropes if you suck up to the mods enough.

I did mention that TvTropes is a mixed bag.

Huh. I've only visited tvtropes once or twice, but for some reason, somebody I don't know and have never spoken to ended up reccing one of my fics. (And no, I'm not being a bragging little shit. This actually happened.)

I'm sure some recs are genuine.

You don't even have to suck up to the mods, or didn't when I was active there. Anyone can make a rec.

Yeah, this sounds like some kind of old bitterness. I don't talk to anyone from the site, but I have some recs there. No sucking up. It's like any fandom hub, it's got the good and the bad.

I had the same experience w/ Dangerverse back when I first found it (c. 2010).

Oh good, it's not just me. Everyone seems to love it so and I spend much of my time going 'Come on there are like five million characters can one of you fail at SOMETHING?'
